Thursday, April 30, 1959 Those who doubted the mobile status of the Haileybury's 1922 Ruggles fire truck were in for a surprise when it answered a fire call last Monday at the Elks Club under its own steam; climbing the-steep Main Street hill on its way back to the Above, Ken Watson, Haileybury fire chi2f drives as Mayor Arthur Cook comes along for the ride, on the running board. It stated that an announcer had said that a certain speaker would 'return '"'neck's weak.' And having heard these same words, myself, many times, I am begin- ning to wonder just whose neck is weak, or if the weakness is higher than the neck. Ruggles Truck On the Job Haileybury Council some few months ago received a recom- mendation. from the chief Fire Marshall of Ontario in which he expressed the opinion that the 1922 Ruggles fire truck which the town were employing as an auxiliary fire truck should be retired and new equipment bought to replace it. It was also later reported that the fire truck would not run and had to be towed to all the fires. Council ignored the recommenda- tion and stood firm on their res- olution not to replace the fire truck. At the same time Council turned dJown a request lodged by Bucke Township for fire assistance on the grounds that the Township was both in a position to recruit and support its own fire fighting force. Last Monuday, io confuse those who said differently old Ruggles truck answered a fire call at the Elks Club, when a-grass fire, out of control, threatened the back en- trance. The truck, under its own steam, arrived at the scene of the fire, to the pleasure of Mayor Arthur Cooke who made a special trip to cheer it from the side lines. Mayor Cooke discredited claims that he had come to the fire to cheer the old truck, but stated that he was keeping a close eye on the fire department to make sure that all the calls that they answered were strictly within. the town lim- its.
