Cobalt Golden Bar Tests Passed at Brownie Meet Sally Smith, Brown Owl of the First Cobalt Brownie Pack, was in charge of the regular meeting on April 8. After the fairy ring was formed, uniforms were inspected. During the work period several Golden Bar tests were passed. Bonnie Buffam and Linda Fildes lemonstrated how to set a table properly and Wendy Watts and Vivian Romano showed the tester the correct method of applying a bandage. The Golden Hand Brownies learned to wrap and ad- Gress a parcel for mailing. The Festival song was practised and several singing games were play- ed, The meeting closed with taps. Library Board Meets » Seven members were present when the Board for the Cobalt Public Library met at the home of Mrs. Walter Fleming on Wednes- day, April 15. Mr. Arnold Todd chaired the meeting. The minutes were read by Mrs. Fleming. Six months rent for the library has been paid by the Recreation Coun- cil, Plans were discussed for. ex- panding the library. Correspond- ence was read and approved, and two of these being of special in- terest to library members. Mr. Roedde, Assistant Director of the Provincial Library Service wrote that the formation of a Regional Library Co-op for Temiskaming and Cochrane Districts has been approved. This is a plan whereby "Bookmobile" will travel around the district, and will enable the libraries of the district to borrow a "Unit" which consists of from 50 to 70 books. These -will 'be on loan for a period of ten to twelve Weeks and the fee for this con- venience is in the neighborhood of $25 a year. This "Bookmobile'"' has proved to be very successful in the Port Arthur area and the Co- balt Library Association will have the benefit of this, we hope, very soon. A letter from the Director of Provincial Library Service, Mr. Angus Mowat, informed the Board that a short course for Librarians is to be held in Toronto this year. The Department of Education does its untmost with aid to the Library Boards in smaller centres. Library classes, as suggested by Mr. D. McGugan, are now being held every Friday at 2 o'clock. Ten pupils come at a time, so far these have been from Grades 4 and 5, During this hour, an action song is taught, Mrs. Fleming outlines a book; and Mrs. Saxton reads a chapter of the book. Each child is loaned a book, free of charge, and also given an application card. A motion was made to hire four girls to work on library days from 4 to 5:30 p.m. These are Patricia Bazinet from St. Patrick's, Norma Socials Bernachia from Ste. Therese and Judy Reise and Marilyn Myers from the Public School. During July and August the library day will change from Friday to Thurs- day. Provisions were made to pur- chase children's French books. It was decided to dress a window at Purdy's Hardware for the first National Library Week in Canada. It is planned to display Library books and a member of the Board will be there from 2 o'clock Fri- day till closing time on Saturday with membership cards. The li- brary will also be open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to give people a chance to look around their Public Library. Tea and Bake Sale The Local Association to the Girl Guides were hostesses at a very successful tea and bake sale in the Community Hall on Friday, April 17. Guests were welcomed at the door by Mrs. H. Rowdon, Miss Gladys Murphy and Captain Jean Giovanella. A Madeira cloth covered the tea table which was attractively ar- ranged with African violets, yellow |, tapers in silver holders and the silver tea services. During the af- ternoon tea was poured by Mrs. C. Bazinet, Mrs. London Times Vetos Bear Hunt Mayor Cooke's opinion that the "Bear Hunt" scheduled for North- erners was not 'warranted, has been substained by the London Times. Mayor Art Cooke said that he would prefer to see the guards go bareheaded rather than bearhead- ed. He was also quoted as saying that Mayor Del Villano of Tim- mins "'was off his rocker for sug- gesting such a hunt". Mayor Cooke wants it clearly understood that he was misquoted and that the ac- tual quotation was 'Mayor Del Villano has rocks in his head. . . The Times says, '*"'No statement has been made either here or in Canada to set reasonable doubts at rest."' roses and carnations were arrang- ed along the stage front. Serving tea were Mrs. H. McLean, Mrs. P. McMillan, Mrs. L. Humphreys and Mrs. G. Russell ably assisted by Girl Guides. The bake table was attended by Miss A. Creighton and Mrs. R. Latimore. Mrs. H. Ogden was in charge of the "Touch and Take" and helping in the kitchen were Mrs. B. Jackson, Mrs. E. Smith and Mrs. F. Rich- ards. The newspaper says the skins of the animals would be received to state that the bears would have been killed in any case. But the idea of the British Army ac- cepting a gift involving slaughter that would not otherwise take place is "not. pretty". The Times urges the governmes to say "'before it is too late' hd the bearskins now in use are nor- mally replaced, how long they are expected to last and what steps are taken to keep them in good condition.
