~ Aeros the Hitchen Table By MRS. MAC: When death claimed Arthur L. Cochrane of Toronto, last. week, at the age of eighty-eight, I am sure that few men, no matter what their station in life, have ever Yan. Founding Camp Temagami _been more sincerely mourned, by "hes & yore people, than that grand old on: Mittawonga Island, (Isle of Sandy Beaches) well over | fifty years ago, he has, during the 'two months of each year that the camp was open, done more to mold the characters of more boys, and in- stil the concept of fair play and good sportsmanship into their minds, than any other man in Can- ada. I spent two months one summer with three girls from New Lis- ' keard and one from Haileybury, jin dining room. service at his eamp and I will never forget the friendliness of his entire family, or the kindness and consideration 'we received while there. We were truly working "'with'"' not "'for" them. He was seventy-five years old the year I was- there and I have a picture of him making a perfect jack knife dive off the tow- er at the boys' dock. He loved to swim by himself and one day as I was walking near the adults beach with the camp nurse, who had been with them for eighteen years, we met Mr. Cochrane head- ing for the beach with his bathing suit. The nurse stopped him and said, "Mr. Cochrane, you KNOW you shouldn't swim -alone." He patted her shoulder, said '"'you're quite right, my dear, I shouldn't. Good-bye," and went on -for his swim. Boys from all over the world, '" many. of whom were' attending Upper Canada College, as well as boys from Canada and the United States. Spent their summers -at the Camp, and in many cases, parents who had attended as boys, came along with their sons for the second half of the season, when a limited number of adults were accommodated. Foster Hewitt was ene of those who attended as boy and man. Tt was something to remember "all one's life, to hear over one hundred boys chanting their camp - yell, in farewell as they left for . a canoe trip to other lakes,* or in ' greeting as they returned; ' ©, C-O, C-H, R-A, R-A, R-A, R-A, | N-E, Cochrane, Cochrane, Temag- | ami." "c The boys ranged in age from | eight. to sixteen years and_ their senior counsellors were mainly ' young medical students from To- ronto University. 'And so Finis is written on the| last page of Arthur Cochrane's life, but the years to come will never erase the stamp of character that he affixed on hundreds of | young lives. Summer Time Don't forget to turn your clocks ahead an- hour before you go 'to bed on Saturday night. - This week-end is the time that summer officially arrives in this district, and time is ad- vanced an hour, to utter con- fusion of children, roosters and robins. And if you forget to do the clock-changing act you will be arriving in church in time to drop your collection on the plate and hear the benediction. NewS from the Evelyn Shoppe "In fine tweed, the 1959 Clas- sic'. This is the suit that will lead many lives, slim, poised, it is beautifully tailored: in muted tweed, very simple in cut with un- derstanding detail, a suit of quiet good breeding in soft shades of toast, blue and grey imported woolen from Scotland by Nat Gor- 'don. A coat we like is a soft tweed blend, another import, of white, tan, pale grey and two very soft shades of blue. This has a most flattering collar; standing slightly away from the throat to frame the \face, and is impeccably tailored by Lois Manley. Another suit, in beige, you will love for its good-looking simplicity, is a design by Norman Hartnell, couturier to H.M. the Queen, in English wool with an interesting texture. ; And what could be more perfect with this suit than a 'Liberty of London'"' blouse of fine Egyptian cotton in a wildflower print on the softest of grey-green backgrounds with the flowers in pale yellow, palest orange and' tangerine with accents of soft brown leaves. Another has pink and_blue tu- lips on a white background, with green leaves and is equally lovely. These are for the person who likes the unusual, plus quality. OS 2-3044 HAILEYBURY | Falls: 100 Feet" Lives To Tell Charles Axcell of Swastika es- caped a hideous death by six days, when he fell from the Railway span that crosses the Blanche River at Englehart. Last week the river under. the bridge was still icebound, and a fall from any height would have been fatal. But when Axcell became tangl- ed with a drill he was using, and fell over 100 feet into the river, the ice had disappeared, and the spring. freshet had swollen the river to a depth of 12 feet, twice normal. He was-hardly stunned by the shock of hitting the water, and was able to swim to shore where he was pulled out of the river by Clem Ruttan, a member of the railway crew.
