Theatre Review Face of a Fugitive Columbia -- Morningside Prod. -- Western drama. (Eastman Co- lor). Two well-staged action se- ences -- one placed at the be- ning, the other at the end -- are » best things about "Face of a Fugitive', an otherwise modest Western. The picture begins with a bang as a convicted bank robber, taken to jail by train in the company of a marshal, makes a sudden es- cape. The criminal is aided by his brother, who shoots the marshal in the process and is also wounded himself. The two outlaws then try to get aboard a fast-moving freight train to make good their escape and director Paul-Wendkos' builds up quite. a suspenseful scene in depicting the way they do it. At the end there is also some real excitement in a gun duel that takes place in a unique setting -- the bar room of a ghost town. The hero has three opponents in this battle, each of whom dies in the dusty, cobweb - covered saloon. Wendkos spins this episode out with skilled technique. In between these two high points of violence, screenplay writers David T. Chantler and Daniel B. Ullman have told a story about a fugitive from the law who comes to a western town and turns over a new leaf, aligning himself with the forces of good against a villainous rancher who has fenced in public land. The fugitive makes friends with all the townspeople, falls in love with an attractive widow, and finally routs the rancher and his cohorts by himself. Gideon Of Scotland Yard Columbia (English-made). Story: Chief Inspector Jack Haw- kins of Scotland Yard starts his day off on the wrong foot as an eager young policeman gives him a traffic ticket. In the course of the '"'typical" day, he learns that one of his detectives accepted bribes, hunts an escaped mad- man who murders a girl, tracks a young girl suspect of payroll rob- bery, and breaks up a bank rob- bery. With all these cases success- fully concluded, he returns home late as usual. There he finds his daughter entertaining the young man who started him off with the traffic ticket.
