Drama Festival Held This Week The QUONTA Festival that was held in New Liskeard in early April roused a deep interest in drama groups that is now being focused on the Dominion Drama Festival being held in the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto from May 18 to May 23. Because of its importance and the encouragement that it gives to Canadian artists, Mayor Nathan Phillips of Toronto has issued a proclamation declaring May 18 to 23 as "Drama Festival Week". Eight Little Theatre groups with more than 120 actors; performers and musicians, will present six evening and two matinee perform- ances. The groups participating will be from Sudbury, Simcoe, Halifax, Montreal, Medicine Hat, and Ot- tawa. The winner of the Festival will be announced following the final performance on May 23 and will receive the coveted Calvert Trophy and a cash award of $1,000. The adjudicator will be Michael St. Denis of New York City, thea- tre advisor to the Rockefeller Foundation. A theatre conference will be held in conjunction with the Festival and will include lecture and panel discussions and demonstrations on make-up. The artists will also be given an opportunity to visit the Shakespearian Theatre at Strat- ford. Mission Circle Holds May Meet Two choruses, "Just a Little Longer', and "Make Me More Like Thee", were sung to open the May meeting of the Pentecos- tal Mission Circle, followed by prayer led by Mrs. Noble Hermis- ton. Mrs. Stan Douglas read an inter- esting letter from Mrs. Eggles- ton, a missionary in the West In- dies, telling of the mission work being done there. Mrs. Churchill gave a short report of the high- lights of the Pentecostal Confer- ence which she had attended in Toronto the previous week, touch- ing particularly on the Bethel Home for Girls. The regular prayer session fol- lowed with Mrs. W. Graff and Mrs. T. Campbell leading. Mrs. Douglas read the minutes and collected the dues and pennies, then all the la- dies worked on their various pro- ject. Fourteen members were in attendance. Mrs. Tom Campbell, Mrs. Arnold Olson and Mrs. C. E. Miller served lunch at the end of the meeting. Leffers fo the Editor May 18th, 1959.
