--* Meross the Kitchen Table By MRS. MAC A colorful poster of Smokey the Bear holding a shovel, and two tiny cubs, one of them climbing up the handle of the shovel, came to this office last week-end to re- mind us that the week of May 16 - 23 is Forest Conservation Week. Isn't it strange that when a new paft of the country is opened to settlers, very few of them have anything in their minds except the urge to cut the forest down and get the land cleared. So few of them have "'the far eye like the hawk, to see the years ahead and make a plan."" Even today, so many farm houses are seen sitting stark and bare, in a field, without a tree to break the wind and provide a bit of 6. and lacking flowers and News from the Evelyn Shoppe You'll love the Canadian look. of Bon Ora casual knits. They're just in, are most. flattering and prac- tically take care of themselves. They are SO easy to wash,. SO easy to dry and so resilient that they spring right back into shape, and. refuse to shrink or stretch. And the: spring pastels look good enough to eat. Melon, mint, cho- colAte and azure. Slightly different but just as pretty are the shades of copper marble and red marble in heather blends: Hf you are planning to travel, these knits are a dream to pack, just roll them on a cardboard tube _and they emerge wrinkleless and Sassy, ready to go anywhere. And they have the Grand'mere guaran- tee attached too. Again with travelling in mind, especially by air, when luggage must be kept to a minimum, Eve- lyn is showing a very clever en- semble of a long duster in a large black and white check cotton with attractivehipline interest..-But -- unzip it at that hipline and, presto you have a smart short jacket with a plain black bow at the back. And for wearing with either the long duster or the short jacket is a matching slim black sheath with a pleated cummerbund of the check. A new summer bag is often need- ed to complement, not one but several costumes. One that will do just that is of soft bone leather with shoulder strap and two zip- pered compartments. A versatile bag, this, to carry with almost any _ outfit. There are dozens of others in in- triguing shapes, colours and ma- terials, so why not shop now while the selection is good? The work that has to be done to- day in reforestation and conserva- tion not only in southern Ontario, but right here in Temiskaming, shows clearly what lack of think- ing ahead and planning can do. And remember, just sixty years ago, roads in Temiskaming were just paths through the forest. So let's all help to conserve what we have by being sure that our fire is out before we leave our picnic spot, and please don't throw cigar- ette butts: or matches out of a ear window. Canada, dear Canada, our Lady of the Snows! As I look out of the window, I see soft, fleecy, beauti- fully- shaped snow flakes drifting hither and yon descending in graceful beauty to sink into obli- vion in the muddy mess on the streets and roads!!! I like snow- flakes, - in their pristine beauty, and in their proper time and place, but good grief, I don't think the fourteenth of May is the proper time for them. However, in our re- port of the weather last week, we were told that in late April in 1933, just twenty-six years ago, the temperature dropped to seventeen degrees BELOW zero, so maybe, we're lucky after all. With Queen Elizabeth's birthday, (April 21) and Queen Victoria's, (May 24) being combined, to save something, I.don't know what, and having the celebration on a Mon- day to please the people who want a long week-end, doesn't it seem rather silly to have the holiday on May 18, when it is supposed to be as Close to May 24 as possible. Of course, the amendment to the Vic- toria Day Act, passed in May, 1952, Haileybury Personals Corporal Keith F. Gagnon, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Gagnon of Haileybury, who has been stationed at MacDonald, Manitoba, for sev- eral years, is now being trans- ferred to Mount Hope, Hamilton. The station in MacDonald is being closed in the near future and Cor- poral Gagnon is to report to Mount Hope in June. Mrs. Larry Curley and Mrs. George Connors, both of Sudbury, left Wednesday for their homes in Sudbury after visiting with Mrs. Curley's niece, Miss Bridget O'Hara. Miss Sandra Fleming, who has been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William V. Fleming, has re- turned to Sudbury. Mr. Rupert Gagnon and Miss Audrey Gagnon of Hamilton, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Gag- non and other friends and rela- tives in town. Mrs. Lillian Ahrndt, who has been visiting her brother, W. C. Thuereck and Mrs. Thuerck, has now left for her tourist camp at Houstan Lake, near Shining Tree. Guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Farmer over the long week-end have been their son- in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Hutt and sons, Barry and Steven of Toronto. Mrs. Joseph Bellin of Kenmore, New York, has returned to "her home after visiting her~ parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Thuerck. says it is to be celebrated on the first Monday immediately pre- ceding the 24th of May, and shall be observed as Victoria Day, but why couldn't those clever legisla- tors have said, "the nearest Mon- day", if it is to be called "Victoria Day?"'
