aS € ss Cobalt Lions Club Third vice - president, Mervin Kelly presided over Monday's din- ner meeting of Cobalt Lions Club held at the Legion Hall. The meet- ing opened with the singing of '"'O Canada" followed by the Lions Code of Ethics read by the Tail Twister, Ernie Thibeault and grace by John Damiani. Throughout the dinner a-sing-song was led by Ernie Thibeault and Ford Chap- man accompanied on the piano. The secretary Kurt Leopold read several letters and gave a report on the third Zone Advisory meet- ing held in Elk Lake on Sunday, May 17. The Cobalt Club was re- presented at this meeting by John Damiani, Pat Slaght, Gerry Presse, Albert Riley and Hubert Audette. Lloyd Humphreys gave a report on the recent canvass for the Canadian National Institute of the Blind and the total:collected to date amounted to -$430.91. Mr. Humphreys expressed the appre- ciation of the Cobalt Lions Club to the various ladies-organizations of the town who undertook the actu- al house to house canvass. John Damiani advised that the Charter Anniversary and Ladies night will be held on Monday, June 22, at the Community Hall. Jerry Presse 'advised that the service club bingo will be held in the Cobalt Com- munity Hall on Thursday, May 28, Socials and the jackpot will be worth $700. Several members were appointed to assist on that night. The president, Pat Slaght, ad- vised that the Cecil Connelly Tro- phy had been presented to the Cobalt Club in Temagami at a recent meeting of the Temagami Lions Club. Cobalt Lions Club will be represented at the District '"'A'"' Convention being held at Windsor May 31, June 1, 2, and 3 by four members, Pat Slaght, John Da- miani, Hubert Audette and Ernie Thibeault. The date of the first meeting in June has been changed from June 1 to June 8 and the in- stallation of officers will be held at that meeting. The "president asked all committee chairmen to prepare a report on the year's activities and turn it in at the next meeting. He also reminded .members to get all outstanding accounts into the hands of the club treasurer not later than Monday, June 8. A presentation of the District Governor's Appreciation. award was made to President Pat Slaght by District Governor Clifford Cox of Temagami. After the meeting adjourned a social hour was en- joyed. The meeting opened with the sing- ing of "'O Canada" followed with the minutes of the previous meet- ing. Room count was taken with the banner going to Mrs. Aspden's class. Members attendance prize was won by Mrs. A. Reise and this month was a gift donated by Mr. C. Abraham of the Fraser Hotel. The treasurer's report show- ed a balance of $81 as the pro- ceeds from the tea held on May 15. This is a special fund to be set aside for playground equipment. A motion was passed that this tea be an annual fund raising project The slate of officers which the nominating committee proposed was unanimously accepted and the new Executive for 1959 - 60 will be Mrs. W. Mallett, president; Mrs. Stan Miller, first vice-president; Mrs. Jake Koza, second vice- president; Mrs. Don McGugan, secretary-treasrer; program com- mittee, Mr. Don McGugan, Mr. Harry Whitham and Mrs. Alma Reise; teacher's representative, Mrs. MacPherson; social commit- tee, Mrs. Allan A. Browne, Mrs. Albert Aird and Mrs, Lawrence Othmer. Mrs. A. Wallman thanked all those who had in any way assisted with the recent tea and bake sale and reported it was a great suc- cess. A playground committee was formed and the following were ap- pointed, Mr. D. McGugan, Mrs. G. Watts and Mrs. J. Koza. The com- mittee will look into the matter of obtaining suitable playground equipment for kindergarten and re- port back to a future meeting. A suggestion was made that the mo- thers of grade eight pupils help out at the graduation banquet in June. The meeting adjourned with the singing of "God Save the Queen" and a social evening of ecards and scrabble was enjoyed by the 27 members present. United Church Explorers The Explorers of Cobalt United Church met on Monday, May 25, for their regular weekly meeting which was held in the back of the Church. The meeting opened with the Purpose and the singing of "This Is My Father's World'. Treasurer Bonnie Mallett gave her report and she also took up the of- ering. The Scripture was read by Betty Stanley and was taken from Act 2: 1-11. Linda Aird led the prayer. A story "The Blot'? was read by Bonnie Mallett." In the absence of the secretary, Marilyn Mathews, Betty Stanley took the minutes. The meeting closed with the motto, the closing hymn and prayer. Five members and their leader, Mrs. Allan Browne were present. Legion Euchre There was a fair: turn-out for the weekly Euchre sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary of Branch No. 44, Canadian Legion held Tues- day night in the Legion Lounge. The following were the prize win- ners for the evening: Ist Mrs. T. Leonard; 2nd Mrs. R. Cooper; 3rd Mrs. D: Moore. Legion Bingo _ At the Legion Bingo held in the Legion Lounge Friday, May 22nd. the following were the winners of the Specials: 1st. Mrs. Beeson; 2nd. Jack Smith, North Cobalt; 3rd. Mrs. Ayotte; 4th. Mrs. Warren; 5th. Mrs. S. Tresidder. Mrs. Lau- zon won the door prize. Friendship Group The Friendship Group of Cobalt United Church held their regular meeting on Tuesday, May 19th. at the home of Mrs. Alva Aspden with Mrs. Helen Mallett presiding. Mrs. Nettie Wallman give the Bible reading and Mrs. Orpha Smith led the prayer. A reading by Mrs. Nora MacDougall was enjoyed by all. This stressed the true meaning of ithe world "Unspeakable" so us- ed in the Bible 'to express some- thing so beautiful and divine that you cannot put it into words. The secretary Mrs. Signe Kangas read the minutes and ithe financial re- port was given by Mrs. Alice Browne. Catering prices were dis- cussed and it was adopted to go along with the prices set by the W.A.
