MAC Excitement ran high in this town last week when that huge transport came hurtling down Main Street, clipped off a couple of trees, a hydrant and light pole, rammed one car into another and a third one into the lake and ended up neck deep in the lake itself. Had any of our pre-election pol- iticians been around they might have realized that a by-pass is long over due and it might have given them something different to fill their air waves with. If ever a by-pass was needed, its needed in the Tri-town area, to escape those sharp turns in Cobalt, the Main Street hill in Haileybury and the postoffice and Greenwood corner in New Liskeard. But as is usual in many such cases, lives will likely have to be lost before anything but talk is done about it. I clipped a little poem out of the Powassan News last week which I want to share with my readers. I only wish they had giv- en the name of the writer, it would be a privilege to know her. Here it is. AGE A QUALITY OF MIND If you have left your dreams be- hind, If hope is cold. If your ambitious powers are dead, If you no longer look ahead, Then--you are old. But if from life you take the best And if in life you keep the zest-- If love you hold, News from the --€ velun Si hoppe On lovely warm days thoughts naturally turn to bathing suits and beach wear. Following this season's fashion trend, the seal of approval has been set on knits for bathing suits and Evelyn is showing some smart models by Cole. One in a green and white circle pattern, another in shades of deep blue, violet, turquoise and white, and still others in black and white. zebra print, in yellows, browns, blues and reds. Cole also brings you the new "Manteltex'"' the original elastic shirring for figure shaping and perfect fit. Another first by Cole, the power profile, is the 'Inner Strategy" bra for the perfect fa- shion-right bust line. "Breathe- with-you" stdys are always flex- ible, always comfortable. Sacony, too, has some smart suits. One in particular, called "Wildflower Print," has a little frilled panel down the front, piped with pink. It also has a matching skirt which can be. worn on the street as well as the beach, and as an extra dividend, you get several matching buttons. Another Sacony model is in peony rose and white Knitted stripes. To complement your beach en-; semble Evelyn has cleverly de-! signed beach robes in terry cloth with big roomy pockets. They come in exotic flower designs in yellow , and orange. or shades of blue, on a white background. And some- thing really new are the terry | cloth beach slippers with a tiny domed pocket on the front, to | hold your "mad money"'. : Finally, to complete the fashion _ Story of beach wear, there are 'beach .hats, Betmar. Italian. im- ! ports, in rough weave white straw, poner straw in red, with-a wider ' 'brim, fine green straw with gog- -sgles, inset in the brim and another | with a scarf attached at the back to protect your neck from the sun. They are.all so lovely and smart that it is hard to describe them so watch Evelyn's windows for a} display of beach wear and see for yourself. No matter how the years go by, No matter how the birthdays fly, You are not old. --An 86-year-old girl; By the time this is published the district annual meeting of South Temiskaming Women's Institute will be over. This year it is being held in Temagami and -we will travel there by bus. I am looking forward to it because Temagami as a hostess branch is second to none. I remember with pleasure my yearly visits: to their branch during my three years as'district president. Visiting the branches was, to me, the greatest privilege of being president. New York Giant For a long time the biggest and most striking skyscraper in New York City was Woolworth Build- ing, 792 feet above the pavement. The present giant, however, is the Empire State Building. It towers to 1,248 feet and has accommoda- tion for about 25,000 tenants and employees. There are 63 elevators and the expresses rise to the 80th floor in less than a minute. | Bay; Josias Larabie A resident of Cobalt for the past 54-years Josias Larabie passed away at Misericordia Hospital, Haileybury on.
