PEN PICTURES The Haileyburian Thursday, June Municipal Clerk Has Varied Career By RUSS Behind the scenes. of every policy-making body there are the men who have the responsibility of carrying out their decisions. At the head of this task force in a municipality is the town clerk, who fulfills these obligations. One such man is Frank Haskett, town clerk of Haileybury. Frank was born in Gravenhurst March 9, 1903, he attended public and high school at Midland and in 1918 en- tered the Bank of Commerce in Midland where he obtained his first experience in accountancy. He soon decided that he wanted to see some of the country, so he joined W. T. Brennan Paving Com- pany as Chief Time Keeper and travelled all through southern On- tario and the Niagara Peninsula with the company until 1932. Next he tried his hand at hotel management with the Elgin Hotel in Gravenhurst and stayed with it until 1942. He was employed with Nobel French Industries until 1944 when he decided to make his first trip to northern Ontario. He was employed with the Chesterfield Mines in Vir- giniatown until the mine closed in 1952. It was at this time that Frank had his first experience in a muni- cipal office, with the Proven Dis- trict of McGarry in Virginiatown. FLEMING December 23, 1955, he came to Haileybury as town clerk and has been here since. Frank decided that Haileybury was the best town to settle in, he likes it very much and says that he will never go south again. He is married to the former Mrs. Bouley of Haileybury. Fishing is his main form of re- laxation which he pursues when he finds the time. He is active in the Rotary Club and holds' the post of treasurer in the Knights of Colum- bus. He is also a member of the Association of Municipal Clerks of Ontario, and is planning to attend their convention next week which is being held at Delawana Inn, Honey Harbour on Georgian Bay. Mrs. De Bastiani left Italy 39 years ago and plans to spend three months visiting in Italy where she has a brother, sister and two sisters-in- law. Mr. and Mrs. H. Mulligan and Gerry spent Sunday in North Bay where they visited Mr. and Mrs. Elmo Valiquette and family. Mrs. Duff Allen of North Bay spent a few days visiting her par- ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Wright. Hylands, granddaughter Valerie Hostetler and Miss Lize Creighton left for Boston, Mass., to attend the grad- uation of their daughter, Mrs. Vi- vian Hostetler. Mr. and Mrs. John Damiani and Mr. and Mrs. Pat Slaght returned from Windsor Thursday after at- tending the Lions International District A Convention. Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Audette re- turned from Windsor where they attended the Lions International District -A Convention. On their way home they visited Mr. and Mrs. Frank Costello at Burlington. Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Thibeault re- turned Friday from the Lions Con- vention at Windsor. Mrs. A. P. Orr and daughter Sandra of Swastika visited Mrs. T. Jackson and other relatives in town over the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. R. Aspden of Do- bie visited their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. T. Welch for the week-end before going to Toronto. Cobalt Council (Continued From Page One) Taxes in arrears are up fifty percent over last year at this time in actual dollars and it was sug-- gested that tthe town 'should make an effort to collect some of this money. A request of a special grant by the St. John's Ambulance was turned down by the council, the budget for grants by the town has already been exceeded. Council's attention was brought to the condition in which the Gas company has left roads and side- walks. The company did a good job repairing the pavement but neglected the shoulders of tthe roads. It was decided that the town should go ahead and repair these faults and charge ithe gas company with that part for which they are responsible. It was also decided that Main Street in front of the Imperial Bank should be barricaded and repaired this coming week. A resolution from the town of Orillia to the federal government, asking them to ease the tight mon- ey situation was endorsed iby the council. Council decided to send a rep- resentative to the sixth annual session of the Town and Village Conference to be held in Timmins this month. Citizens appeared before Council requesting that tthe old Master Met building just off Prospect Ave. should be destroyed or boarded up to prevent the place being used for drinking parties. Near-by resi- dents fear that these shacks might be set on fire and endanger the surrounding homes. Council mem- Company had already been con- tacted but no-reply had been re- ceived. The place will be boarded Brownies - Guides Have Joint Meet The Second Brownie Pack and the Haileybury Girl Guides held a joint meeting Monday evening in the high school auditorium. The occasion was a Fly Up Cere- mony for three Brownies who had completed their Golden Hand tests by the age of eleven, which entitles them to receive their wings, to fly up to Guides. The three girls flying up were Linda Camsell, Lin- da Gibson and ~Mary Elizabeth Campbell. They were. welcomed by Captain Marilyn McQuaid. The Divisional Commissioner, Mrs. Hubert Doran, was present and presented several Guides with the badges they had earned. Mrs. Leo Lauzon and son Conrad motored to Montreal where they spent a few days visiting.
