When young people show active interest in this it is a good indication of the suc- cess of our educational system, and that the future of our country is in good hands. Wilfred J. Bailey, is one of these public spirited young men who have taken an active interest in public affairs. Wilf has been on the town council for the past two years, holding the position as Chairman of Health and Welfare, he is also President of Temiskaming 'Tuberculosis Asso- ciation, director of the Children's Aid Association in Temiskaming, President of ithe Temiskaming Pro- gressive Conservative Association and is Past President of the Hail- eybury Rotary Club. In the recent election he was campaign manager for A. R. Herbert, M.L.A. Wilf was born in Earlton in 1925, but soon moved to New Liskeard where he attended Public and High: Schools. After graduating from school he went to work at the Wabi Iron Works in New Liskeard. He enlisted overseas in 1944. After the war Wilf returned to New Liskeard, he married Miss Dorothy Austin a Haileybury girl and shortly afiter, in 1951, moved to Haileybury to work as an under- writer for the Great West Life In- Surance Company.. He is now a family man with two children a boy and a girl. Wilf covers a great deal of fete ritory in his job, as his selling takes in from Virginiatown to Temagami. He states that people are easy tto deal with and that he enjoys mingling with them in the course .of his job. As a Haileyburian he _ notes "Haileybury has alt the potentials for an industrial town. In a recent report there were 12 essential points for a town to check its po- tential by, such as, schools, police protection, water works, and re- serve labour pool. I checked every- one of 'them: relevant to Hailey- bury," he said, and if this result is any indication of the potential of Haileybury, we are in for a bright future." "Of course the existing industries must be assisted," he continued, in the army and went}. "so that they. will Stay, and we must sell ourselves to potential industries, but it is an undertaking that a willing and well organized body of citizens could tackle with excellent results," Wilf received word from the Tu- berculosis Society Headquarters that he is in for some work this season organizing the district so- ciety for a big seven week X-Ray survey in the fall which is designed to blanket the area, making the most thorough check to date. There is a great deal of organizing in- volved in this kind of a project and as president of ithe society, Wilf_is in for a busy time. His hobby is taking home-movies, he has taken movies in all parts of Canada and the United States, and has such illustrious people on his footage as President Eisenhower, John Foster Dulles, Queen Eliza- beth and John Diefenbaker. Mr. Harkness, Monday, gave Parliament customary notice of legislation 'to establish the new credit system, incorporating pro- visions of ithe present Farm Loan Act bult- adding "fa new type of su- pervised firm mortgage credit." He said the present act would be repealed. He gave no further details but from other sources it was under- stood the new legislation would provide farmers with bigger in- dividual loans. Under the present act, a farmer [can get a maximum loan of $15,- 000 for a 30-year period at five per cent interest, based on 65 per- Graduation Day At Cobali School COBALT -- The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees, Township School Area Cobalt and Coleman was held in the Cobalt-Coleman Public School, Monday, June 8, at 7:30 p.m. The trustees present were H. Arnold Todd, chairman; W. Fleming, B. Jackson, Rev. G. S. Johnston and I. Tresidder; also the Principal D. C. McGugan and secretary-treasurer, Mrs. Cameron. The meeting opened with a pray- er offered by Rev. G. S. Johnston. The minutes of the last regular meeting were read and approved. Rev. G. S. Johnston resigned as a trustee as he is moving away. The Board accepted this resignation, with regret. Drapes are to be ordered for three rooms which will complete this project. The Cobalt Separate School Board extended an invita- tion to the official opening of St. Patrick's School on June 21. The accounts approved for pay- ment totalled $7,668.81. The School Attendance Officer's report showed that eight absentee calls were made in May. The Principal re- ported that the enrolment for May was 335, and the average daily at- tendance was 299.9. --. Mr. H. W. Whitham was ap- pointed to complete the ae term of 'Rev., Johnston.
