Page 12 The Haileyburian Thursday, June 25, 1959 Recreation In Haileybury Recreation in Haileybury has come a long way since the time of the first pioneers, when recreation was a matter of self entertainment more than a part of an organized social activity. It is becoming more essential each year that recreation be well planned and well organized, in or- der to function properly. This is an opportune time to discuss the Hail- eybury recreation set-up, since this fall members representing recre- ' ation societies from communities all over northern Ontario will be assembling in Haileybury to-attend the annual meeting of the Northern Ontario' Zone of ithe Ontario Re- ceration Commission. The aim of : this convention is to make the | members of the various societies more familiar with the best ways of organizing and financing the re- ereation in their own municipali- euless This year also the people of the town of Haileybury have been 'Ser- iously considering ithe building of a new recreation centre, to pro- | vide both more recreation facil- | ities and quarters in which they ean unify their activities. The activities which are support- ed by the Haileybur Recreation _ Commission are as follows: This year the Commission have H two park supervisors, who will take 'eharge of the children in Rotary Playground, Joyce Houtling and Sally Whitby. The supervisors will be oni duty. from 10 a.m. to 12 'moon 'and' from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. 'every. day. The~ playground is |planned to provide recreation in 'the form of crafts, games anda istory hour for children between the ages of four and twelve. The 'highlight of the season will be an over-night camping trip for regu- jar attenders. The supervision will begin on: July 2. This. year's beach program is planned to start July 3, the senior lifeguard is Pat Arnold, assistant {supervisors are Cathy Neelans 'and Erna St. Louis. They will be acting as lifeguards and swimming instructors. The supervisors will be at the beach from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and there will be no instruction on Sunday. The classes will be period- ically tested by Red Cross instruc- tors, Enrolment age is from five years of age and up. Last year, twelve swimmers tried the Red Cross Tests. In field sports J. Shouldice, as- sisted by Jack Walker and Ernie St. Louis look after the softball, including Pee Wees, Bantams and Midgets,. they compete in the local loop, and the Juveniles in the Wabi Valley League, Last year they won the. Northern Ontario Softball Championship. The sweaters were supplied by B.P:; Company, and crests were supplied by Hill-Clark and Francis. This year the Recreation: Com- mission is supporting the Hailey- bury Town Softball League. Dud- dley Huff is in-charge, with, Pappy Hurd as vice-chairman, and Norm Abraham, secretary-treasurer. In addition the Commission sup- ports. the Tennis--€lub of 'which Marilyn White is secretary-treasur- er. The president's chair is vacant. Under winter sport, George Wes- ton is in charge of the Saturday morning hockey. Last year there were 150 boys in the Minor and Midget Leagues. They had oné game in Larder Lake. G. Regimbal is in charge of 'the broomball, which is carried on during the winter months. Curling Club members volunteer their time and skill during the season to help out in the student curling. Harold Hammerstrom is the president of the High School Curling Club. Last year the Ladies' Curling League gave the student curlers a bonspiel. The club has 24 active curlers. The council donates the films and projector to any youth organization. In the coming year the Commis- sion plans ito start a Senior Citi- zens' Club which will be held once a month.
