Haileybury, Ont., June 25, 1959 Sc: COP¥ Langis Silver Team Wins Rescue Tests The 7th Annual Cobalt Gowgan- da Mine Rescue Competition was held at the Cobalt Memorial Arena on Saturday, June 20th from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with 'five teams taking part. The 'Langis Silver Mines team carried off top honours. with the Silver Miller team placing second; Siscoe Metals third; Ag- nico Mines fourth and Castle Trethewey fifth. The chief judge was Mr. Archie Graham of Timmins and field judges were Len Cunningham and Gordon Kirk. The oral judges were Armand Cote and Bob How- ard. Bob Galway District Engineer of Mines, acted as score-keeper and time keeper. The competition Was divided into three parts, oral, field test and problem. A briefing officer was 'appointed for each team and as each team entered the competition its briefing officer met with the chief judge in a special room where he was given maps, known conditions and ail information up to the time ithat the iproblem became existant, The 'problem in this case was a fire underground and the teams would have to go down, put out the fire, locate the men and bring them out. The briefing officer was allowed 10 minutes with ithe chief judge to explain how his team would tackle 'the problem. He wais then allowed another 10 minutes to brief his team. Judging was done on a de- merit basis. The arena' was in total darkness to simulate under- ground conditions and each team member wore his miner's lamp. The briefing officers were: C. Crozelle for the Langis team; D. Horan for Silver Miller; A. Mc- Kinnon for Siscoe Metals; Harold McLean for Agnico; and C. Rham- ey for Castle Trethewey. A banquet was held in the Com- munity Hall Saturday evening with tthe Ladies' Auxiliary of Branch No. 44 Canadian Legion catering. Mr. George McPhail, Inspector of Mines Rescue Tiraining, acted as chairman for the banquet and Mr. Bill Bawden, Chief Engineer of Mines of Toronto, presented the trophies. Amards were made as follows: The "mine operators Trophy and mantel clocks 'to the winning. team Langis Silver whose members were: Red Lafoy (cap- tain), J. Hearn, V. Martel, CG. Ruddy and R. Blanchard (vice captain). Four silver dollars were presented to tthe following mem- bers of the Silver Miller team who placed second: Sam Sullivan (cap- tain), Larry Audet, (Lawrence Audette, J. Berube and Lawrence Othmer (vice captain). Three 'sil- ver dollars went to the following members of the Siscoe-Metals team who placed third: R. Durl- ing (captain), <A. Brown, H. Store Hours Cobalt--The retail section of the Chamber of Commerce met here Monday evening to settle store hours for the silver town, but met with only par- tial success, Commencing on July 1, re- tail grecery stores in Cobalt will be closed all day Wednes- day, will close Monday, Tues- day, Thursday and Saturday at 6 p.m. and remain open on Friday evening until 9 p.m. But the other Stores were unable to come to agreement about the full day Wednesday closing and wlil meet again to See if a decision can be reach- ed. Two silver dollars were presented to each member of the fourth place 'team Agnico Mines: Willis St. Jean (captain), G. Ross, E. Christo, L. Coe and Wellington St. Jean (vice captain). A 'silver dollar went to each mem- ber of the fifth place team Castle- Trethewey: A. Joufmann (cap- tain), H. Brown, R. Plante, M. Coti and E, Hartzke (vice captain). Following the banquet and pre- sentation of prizes a dance was held with an orchestra from Kirk- land 'Lake providing the music. All team members are to be congratulated on the fine manner in which they carried out their re- spective duties during the compe- titions and few people realize the many hours of studying these men put in not only for the competitions but for mine rescue training in general. Instruction and training in this area is under the supervi- sion of A. "Sandy" Wilson, Mines Rescue Superintendent for the De- partment of Mines who makes his headquarters in Cobalt. An inter- ested spectator at Saturday's competition was Jock Lang, re- tired Mine Rescue Superintendent of Geraldton who is now residing in Kirkland Lake. } | \ 1 Miss Gladys Murphy, principal of the St. Patrick's school, shows off some new equipment to visitors. It was on June 19; 1909, that Miss Elin Grace became the bride of Nat Oslund and went to make her home on his farm on ithe West Road, just out of Haileybury. Now fifty years later, tthey are still liv- ing there, with their door always epen for their friends and neigh- bors and 1a warm welcome await- ing any who go through it. Although ithey lived on a farm, Mr. Oslund followed his lure of mining and is well-known all over the north as a prospector. Mr. and Mrs. Oslund have a family of five, two sons, Martin of Haileybury and Walter in London, England, and three daughters, Mrs. E. B. Campbell, Haileybury; Mrs. James Hillcoat, Thornloe, and Mrs. Jack Craig, Elliot Lake. They also have eleven grand- children. Their entire family with the exception of 'those in England, were home for the occasion. To receive her guests, Mrs. Os- lund wore a dress of navy bro- caded silk with a corsage of gold- en yellow mums. Flowers and gifts were received from the guests, numbering over one hundred, who came to con- gratulate this popular couple. A beautiful coffee table was the gift of ithe family iand a cable was re- ceived from the son in England as wel. Fatima High School Graduation Ceremony An interesting graduation cere- mony was held in Holy Cross Church, presided over by His Lordship, Bishop Maxime Tessier for tthe following graduates of Fatima High School, Margaret La- vigne, New Liskeard; Dorothy Ann McDonald, Cobalt; Paul Fleury, North Cobalt; Raymond Lamothe, Donald Morissette and Robert Des- marais, all of Haileybury; Emile Heroux, Earlton; Rene Lanthier, and Roger Morin, both of North Cobalt. The program opened with the "Graduation March", played on the organ by Sister St. Auguste and prayers by Rey. lL. Brunette, Parish Priest. An address was then Tessier and the gma-ag Behe given by His Lordship, Bishop Tes- sier and the diplomas were pre- sented to the graduates. Special gifts were given to the students coming first in each sub- ject and Margaret Lavigne, Dor- othy McDonald, Paul Fleury, Ray- mond Lamothe, Donald Morissette and Robert Desmarais had the hon- or of receiving one or more of these. The Valedictory was given in French by Robert Desmarais and in English by Raymond Lamothe. Following this a hymn _ of thanksgiving was sung by the boys of Grades IX and X. An Act of Lavigne and Dorothy Ann McDon- ald read an Act of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The ceremony ended with a solemn mass celebrated by the Bishop, assisted by Monsignor Jac- ques Landriault and Monsignor Rene Audet, both prelates. Following the mass a reception was held in the parish hall which was decorated in tthe school colors, blue and gold, silhouettes of the graduates the crest and inscription '"'Lucere et Ardere". A buffet lunch was served by the Parent's Committee. Farewell Service For Lieut. Switzer Lieutenant Bruce Switzer of the Haileybury-Cobalt Salvation Army Corps, preached his farewell ser- mon at Cobalt on Sunday evening. Afiter one year's service in this area, Lieutenant Switzer is being transferred The appointment of his successor has not yet been made, but it will be a newly commissioned officer to Aurora, Ontario. Consecration to the Sacred Heart|from 'the Toronto Salvation Army of Jesus was read by Margaret| Training College. Some five hundred people gathered at Haileybury station Tuesday to see His Excellency Bishop Maxime Tessier leave for Rome. The Bishop was making his first ad liminal visit where he will report to the Pope on progress in his diocese. Above, from left to right, Monsignor A.
