rd ees - Across the Kitchen Table By MRS. MAC This will be my last "Across. the Kitchen Table" for some time be- cause for the next seven weeks it will be "Across the Ocean Wide" for me and one of ithe nice things about it all is that there will be no kitchen tables, no floors to clean, no beds to make, and no meals to plan. This morning, (Friday), I am going around in a daze, (and be- fore Mr. Bond gets a chance to say "THIS morning?" let me'say, in more of a daze than usual. I have just picked up our boat tickets and ithey have given me such a 'final' feeling. Up to now I have been rather expecting .to wake some morning and find that y plans were only dreams. Hiow- er, now we know we sail from Montreal iat noon on July 10 and anrive at Liverpool on the fore- noon of July 16. We will be met by Mrs. McGhie of Abergele, who will take us tto Wales for three days. During this time we will meet ait least two Institute branch- es and visit la couple of schools, which will be of particular inter- est to Mrs. Beach as she is a born teacher. July 19 we go to London for a night with John Hunt's mother, (many of our~ Institute members here will remember her), iand then leave Victoria Staltion the next morning for a 12 day con- duct bus tour of Belgium, Holland, Germany, Switzerland and France returning to England 'on July 31. We will go to Oxford to meet an- other Institute and be entertained News from the Svelyn Shoppe Dresses, refreshing as your morning coffee. Cool voiles, one polka-dotted, 'sleeveless, with soft fullness in the skirt; another washable voile, with rosy-violet toned flowers in vertical panel effect on a white background, has a softly pleated bodice and skirt. Very striking! A new arrival in Moygashel linen is a sheath in bone shade with low scoop neckline and very short sleeves. - We note that the Queen has been favoring gay prints in many of her travel dresses, in such smart com- binations of colors as jade green with turquoise, tan with yellow, pimento with blue. We have a number of dresSes in cotton and also in pure silk in many of these combinations, so beautiful that we wonder how the textile artists can think up such perfect blendings that are so satisfying to the eye- Practically all of the Queen's ward- robe is designed by Norman Hart- nell. We have several pieces in suits and coats also designed by Harinell, from "Gordon's collec- tion." The suits are classic styling and dateless. We have been rather disappointed in the interest shown in these beautiful costumes, so while they last, you will find a ten dollar reduction on 'the price tag. For those who have been asking: new shipments of crinolines are just in, also "Pussy Paw" thong sandals. This col- lege is owned and operated by the Institute 'branches in 'England. Then to Edinbungh to meet the other Ontario members and attend the A.C.W.W. conference from August 3 to August 15. On the 16th we leave on a three day bus tour of places of interest in Scotland and on the 19th sail from Glasgow to Ireland. After four days there, back to London unitil August 26 when we sail from Southampton back to Montreal. There's an old song that says something about "I've got six pence, jolly, jolly, six pence, to last me all my life." Well, when I get back from this trip I'll have something much better than jolly six-pences, I'll have colored slides, (I hope) and of this I am certain, Ill have. memories more precious than silver or gold, memories of places visited, friendships renew- ed and new ones made, and a wealth of informaition gleaned from many different countries and their people. Canada consumes almost much paperboard as paper. as Cobalt Lions Club Sponsors Hypnotist What do you think you would do in a hypnotic trance? Merlin, the Hypnotist, who is appearing at the Cobalt Community Hall on Friday and Saturday, July 3 and 4, will call a number of willing volun- teers from the audience. While under hypnosis, they will shiver with cold, see a motion picture and other uncanny demonstrations, which Merlin achieves through the power of suggestion. A feature of this show is to make a volunteer stiff as a board, then stretch him between two chairs, his head on the edge of one chair and his heels on the edge of the other. Then Merlin stands on the person's stomach. After it's all over the volunteer remembers the demonstration as though it had taken place in a dream. To dem- onstrate the power of post hypnotic suggestion, Merlin tells the volun- teers tthat their right foot will be fastened to the floor when they try to leave the stage. They find it impossible to leave the stage until Merlin breaks the spell. Another. feature is Erna the Princess of Magi, who has master- ed the Hindu Basket trick. Merlin is one of the few magi- cians who has mastered the es- cape from a strait jacket, which is generally considered to be the most difficult of all the magician's accomplishments. Instead of escaping from a thoroughly examined and padlock- ed box, as the Great Houdini used to, Merlin locks a young lady in the box, and then in a matter of seconds, the lady is out and Merlin is in. The box is unlocked, the lid removed, and out jumps Merlin. Were Houdini alive and active today, undoubtedly the two ma- gicians would be close competi- tors for the top position as escape experts. This show starts at 8 p.m. each evening and is being sponsored by the Cobalt Lions Club. Proceeds to be used for Welfare and Boys and Girls work in the community.
