Officials have been speculating the move for some time and a plot of land on the corner of Golding Street and Whitewood Avenue has been pur- chased and work is already under way to clear it in preparation to erect new buildings. Imperial Oil Company has been operating in Haileybury for forty-seven years. Robert Jenkins, who was for forty-six years the Imperial Oil Company representative in this area and only recently retired stated that "It is the logical move, this saves a lot of trucking and New Liskeard is by flar the largest consumer. Haileybury was the best locaition fifty years ago when the major part of the consumers were supplied by dake barges and when Cobalt was booming." Originally the MHaileybury site was occupied by the Queen City | yy the Imperial Oil;Oil Company which came to Nor- Company have announced their in-| thern Ontario in 1907. The Imperial Oil Company took over the Queen City Oil Company site in 1912, and at that time was the only company in Northern On- tario. Imperial Oil was established in Haileybury even before there was.an outlet in North Bay. Though twice burnt out the com- pany rebuilt and has not moved from its first location, rebuilding both times on the original site. Tim McCoy After a lapse of over twenty years, days of the Old West, enjoyed so much by Grandpa and Grandma, as seen with the great Wild West Shows such as 101 Ranch, Tim McCoy, Pawnee Bill, Buffalo Bill and many others, will come to life again when Carson & Barnes, America's 3rd largest Wild Animal Circus, comes to Haileybury under the auspices of the Rotary Club, on Tuesday, July 28th. Famous Col. Tim McCoy, proclaimed the most authentic TV and Western movie cowboy, presents his "Real Wild West," complete with Indians, stage coach raid, sharpshoot- ing and all the other thrill events that will make for an ex- citing day at the Circus. The last time a program of this sort was presented to the public by a Circus was in 1935-36-37 when Col. Tim' McCoy presented the same type program for three successful years with the then great Ringling Bros. Among the big attractions with Carson & Barnes this year will be the big herd of Elephants, which will include the 11,000-pound Josky, the largest performing elephant on tour. Also on the bill will be the best of the Big Top's aerialists, acrobats, jugglers, wire walkers, animal acts, plus the Clown Congress of fun fellows. The public is invited to visit the show grounds at 10 a.m. on Cireus Day to watch the feeding and watering of the menagerie animals free and to see the elephants erect the Big Top. Thursday, July 16, 1959 Yyypyy Imperial Oil Moves to New Liskeard Convicted of Theft From District Store District police hope that the rash of break-ins in the Tri-Town area have been cured with the arrest and conviction of three young men from Fabre, Quebec. At police court last Friday af- ternoon F. Plante, D. Pelchat and F. Audet pleaded guilty to theft from McCulloch Chain Saw build- ing just north of New Liskeard, and were sentenced by Magistrate E. W. Kenrick. Plante had a recard and the magistrate. remarked that he thought he had misled his com- panions. After the conviction, provincial police patrol of the area in which eluded discovery despite constant police patrol of the area in which the store was located. They drove into New Liskeard in a car and two jumped out by the store when there was no traffic and hid in nearby ditches. The third man drove around New Liskeard to find out where the po- lice cruisers were. While the driver was scouting for police, his com- panions waited until there was little traffic'and forced a basement window. They then hauled out tools and equipment, ran across the highway with them and hid them in the ditch. When the driver of the car was certain that there were no police in the area he stopped by the ditch loaded up the stolen equipment and the trio returned to Quebec. The trio confessed to the theft of several chain -saws and. a quantity of chain, much of which was recoveredsin Quebec by Ontar- io and Quebee Provincial Officers. However, the police investiga- tions: are continuing on both sides of the border. There is still an out- board motor and other equipment missing. It is not known whether another gang also robbed the build- ing or whether the trio have some as yet unknown accomplices. Annual Reunion Of Mackay Clan (Mr, and Mrs. A. Speicher, Hail- eybury, and their family, Mrs. J. Watson, Mrs. M. Cawley, Noranda, Mrs. Ted Kergon and Neil Speich- er, Toronto, attended the annual reunion of the "McKay Clan" July 4th in* Bracebridge, at the home of Mr. Ken Crockford who is a brother of Mrs. Speicher. There were over two hundred descendents and relatives, old and young, present from all over Can- ada and parts of the United States. A pleasant feature of the day was the visit of our Queen to Gra- venhurst. So many took the op- portunity to attend the welcome accorded her there.- Games, music and old time sing- ing brought a delightful day to a close, : Mill Rate The new mill rate has been approved for the town of Haileybury and the tax bills are already Circulating throug' the mail. . Total levy for public school supporters is 103.48 mills for the commercial rate and 96.90 residential rate.- The general total levy for last year was 94.13 for commercial and 87.47 for residential. Most of the raise came in the school tax, the Public school tax was up about 5 mills and the High School tax was up approximately 2 mills. Separate School supporters are paying a commercial rate of. 107.19 mills and a residen- tial rate of 100.61 mills as compared to 95.86 mills com- mercial rate and 89.20 mills residential rate in 1958. This represents a jump of 6 mills in Separate School tax and 1 mill in High School tax. General rate for both Sep- arate School and Public School supporters is up from 48.16 to 51.38 mills: commercial rate, and 41.50 mills to 44.80 mills 5 over the rate effective fer last year.
