After a happy year working at the Indian settlement at Fort Mc- Pherson, on tthe MacKenzie River she moved further North to Port Harrison and there has her first experience of igloos, seal hunting, the barter system and the unfami- liar temperament of the Eskimo. Miss Hinds found the Eskimo like the Indians, naturally intelligent and quick to learn, and with the help of Elijah, her Eskimo inter- preter, her classes made rapid pro- gress, even though the children had to travel two or three miles to reach the school house. Margery Hinds, who comes from Kent, has been teaching for many years now in northern lands. At present she is at Cape Dorset, on Balffin Island, where the Eskimos live in widely scattered camps supplementing their incomes by carvings and handicrafits. Centenary At Jalna By Mazo De La Roche The centenary of the building of Jalna is at hand, and Renny is eager that it shall be marked by another great event in the history of Jalna, the marriage of his daughter Adeline. Her happiness is very dear to him, but it is no secret that his favourite candidate is her cousin, Philip Whiteoak, son of Piers. However there are others in the field, and the Master of Jalna finds that he is dealing with emotions that he cannot con- The Haileyburian Page 11 trol with his usual authority. _ As always with this fascinating family, much else is happening at the same time. Finch's young son Dennis brings about a tragedy through his absessive love for his father and jealous hatred of his stepmother. In contrast to Dennis is Mary, Pheasant's small girl, who is equally puzzled by the adult world but in a happy and merely curious way. Wakefield comes home again, sick and involved in his ill-starred relationship with Molly Griffith, which reaches a climax during his stay at Jalna. Thus the Whiteoaks move on against the familiar background of their home, still holding us with their tensions, bickerings, exciite- ments and sorrows. At the end we see them ail, united despite their diversity, at the celebrations of the centenary of Jalna and the wed- ding of the namesakes of its found- ers. 'REPAIR. BEN J.
