Cobalt Socials Rebekahs Noble Grand Agatha Cameron welcomed fifteen members of Golden Gate Lodge, Kirkland Lake, several members from Northern Beacon Lodge as well as Sister Stanley from Victory Lodge, B.C., to the meeting of the Silver Re- bekah Lodge which was held Wed- nesday, June 24, in the I.0.0.F. Hall. The meeting opened in reg- ular form and the Duties of Of- ficers were repeated. Routine busi- ness was conducted with gratify- ing reports given by the various committees. Vice-Grand Carrie Birtch listed several members and families had been ill and cards and gifts had been sent. Sister Signe Kangas read the financial re- port for the C.P.T. committee. Noble Grand congratulated the C.P.T. for its excellent report. A letter was read from Mrs. Fairman of New Liskeard announcing that the District meeting is to be held in New Liskeard on Saturday, July 4. Sister M. Greensides re- ported she now had materials for the members to make up into ar- ticles for sale at the fall bazaar to be held October 9. First nomin- atién of officers for the ensuing term was held. Several' of the mémbers thanked the Lodge or unknown friends for cards and gifts they had received. The Noble Grands of the two visiting lodges spoke briefly and thanked the Sil- ver Rebekah Lodge for an enjoy- able evening. Sister Muriel Tresid- der reported having visited Sister Iva Brydges, who wished to be remembered to all her friends. Sister Cameron thanked all mem- bers who filled in for the various officers. As there was no further business lodge closed in regular form. Following the closing the officers exemplified ithe "Lord's Prayer", with candles. Sister Mur- iel Tresidder was soloist. Sister Marie Greensides who was in charge of the entertainment is to be congratulated on the excellent program which was made up of a teading by Sister Larsen, skits; games and a sing-song. A cold plate supper. was served by the losing "Attendance" team and to}. the singing of "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows" the guests left for home. Baby Shower Mrs. J. Yanyk and Mrs. D. Swaychuk were joint hostesses for a stork shower in honour of Mrs. Claude Lacroix held Tuesday, June 23, at the home of Mrs. D. Sway- chuk. The evening was pleasantly passed with games and bingo af- ter which the guest of honour opened her gifts assisted by Mrs. Yanyk and Miss Rita Belanger. The many attractive and useful items included a bathinette, high chair and stroller. A delicious Tunch was served by Mrs. Sway- chuck assisted by Mrs. Yanyk, Mrs. Bosselle, Mrs. P. Sylvester and Mrs. E. Belanger. Legion Euchre Resumes Due to many requests the weekly Legion euchre has resumed after a lapse of a few weeks. Mrs. H. Cooper is convener for these pop- ular Tuesday night card parties. Winners for Tuesday, June 23, "were Mrs. H. Beeson, Mrs. D. Moore and Mrs. F. Marcotte. 'St. Pat's Bingo The regular Friday night bingo Sponsored by St. Patrick's parish was held June 26, in the Legion lounge. Winners were Mrs. Warren, Mrs. E. Beatty, Mrs; Bos- selle, Mrs. M. Cunningham and Mrs. R. Stewart, Mrs. P. Winks, Mrs. Cook, Mrs. Bambrick, Mrs. M. Cunningham and Mrs. Z. Church, the door prize was won by Mrs. Gabbani. ve Ernest Charles Geck The death occurred at Miseri- cordia Hospital on Friday, June 26, of Ernest Charles Geck, a resi- dent of Cobalt for the past 50 years. Mr. Getk had suffered from a heart condition for the last three years. Born in London, England, 71 years ago, he came to Canada and on July 28, 1928 at Western Ontario, he was married to his wife, Hilda, who survives him. The body rested at the Buffam Funeral Home until 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 29, when the funeral service was conducted at St. James' Ang- lican Church, Cobalt, with Rev. G. S. Johnston officiating. Interment was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Haileybury. Pall-bearers were Stan Miller, Tremaine Welch, Hugh Armstrong, George Cambray, Harry Groom and W. Ross. Besides his wife, Mr. Geck leaves two sons, Ernest, Co- balt and Robert at home, one daughter, Doreen, Mrs. Mac Hes- lip of Hound Chutes, one brother, Lew of London,\ England, and two sisters, Bena, Mrs. Hunt, and Ger- trude, Mrs. Abbott also of London, and six grandchildren. Penny Sale The Silver Nugget Women's In- stitute held a bingo and penny sale at the Community Hall on Thursday, July 2. Winners of spe- cials at the bingo were Mrs. C. Osterburg, Mrs. F. Firemen's Tournament 'The Cobalt Volunteer Fire brig- ade team placed 4th in the wagon race held at the annual Firemen's tournament in South Porcupine Wednesday, July Ist, and carried off a cup and $15.00 prize money. Twenty-four teams were entered in this year's tournament. Albert Chitaroni, representing Cobalt, placed third in the Firemen's foot race. The tournament this year formed a part of the Porcupine Old Home week celebrations. AUTIO - YOUNIE A wedding of interest to Cobalt residents took place on Saturday, July 4th, at 7 p.m. in Trinity United Church, Kirkland Lake, when Jacqueline Stella Younie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Younie of Kirkland Lake, became the bride of Robert John Autio, son of Mrs. Aino Autio and the late Olavi Autio of Kirkland Lake, formerly of Cobalt. Yellow and coral gladioli formed the setting for the double ring ceremony. Miss Sylvia Hoshko sang "O Perfect Love" and during the signing of 2 the register "Because". The bride, who was given in marriage. by her father, chose a cocktail length gown of embroidered nylon with scoop neckline, cap sleeves and bouffant skirt. A pearl headdress held her shoulder length tulle veil and her only jewellery was a single strand of pearls. She carried a bouquet of red roses. 'Mrs. Gilmore, sister of the bride, was matron of honor wear- ing a pale yellow nylon chiffon gown with floating back panel, a headdress band of white feathers and carried a bouquet of shasta daisies. The groomsman was Ron- ald McArdell, Following the ceremony a re- ception was held in the rainbow room of the Park Lane Hotel with music provided by Johnny Gar- butt's orchestra. Mrs. Younie, mother of the bride, attired in beige and blue muted print dress with white hat and corsage of white carnations, received the guests assisted. by the groom's mother who chose a dress of blue and white printed crepe with matching jacket, blue straw hat and corsage of pink carnations. The bride and groom left for a honeymoon trip to points in Nor- thern Ontario and on their return will reside at 29 McCamus Avenue in Kirkland Lake. Out of town guests included Mrs. Ellis Autio, Mrs. Jiack Haara- la, Mr. Allan Haarala, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Rajala, and Miss Helvie Niemi, all of Cobalt. Farewell Party About twenty friends of Mrs. Allan Brown gathered at the home of Mrs. Maurice Belanger on Sun- day, July 12, for a farewell get-to- gether prior to Claire's moving to her new home at Gowganda. The guests spent a pleasant evening of games, singing and listening to records. A presentation of lingerie, bath soap and brooch and earrings was made to the guest of honour. A lovely lunch was served by the hostesses Rhea Duval, Helen For- get and Colleen Belanger. Those who attended were Louise Hayes of Montreal, Rita Bazinet, Anita Bilodeau, Giselle Pickard, Lucille Kingston, Theresa Sullivan, Teen Slaght, Jean Tresidder, Georgie Church, Connie- Perreault, Jean- ette Belanger, Edith Price, Maisie Rody, Dell Dean, Rhea Duval, Helen Forget, Colleen Belanger, and the. guest of honour Claire Brown, Reverend Johnston Leaves Cobalt 'A social evening was held re- cently iat Buffam's cottage for Rev. and Mrs. George S. Johnston who have left Cobalt to take up resi- dence at New Port, Vermont. The Johnstons came to Cobalt from Englehart two years ago, and took an active part in school, commun- ity and church affairs. During the evening a purse was presented to Rev. Johnston by Hugh Armstrong and the presentation of a brooch and earring set to Mrs. Johnston by Mrs. Isabel Fildes, president of St. James W.A. A' lovely lunch, provided by the ladies of the W.A., was served. St. James Ang- lican. Church in Cobalt 'will 'be without a resident minister until the new minister arrives which will be sometime in August, but church services will ibe héld as usual on Sunday a.m. at 11 o'clock with Rev. Nixon of Haileybury officiating. Girl Guides Return From Camp Lovely weather was enjoyed by the local Girl Guides who return- ed home Saturday from ten days of camping at Sesekinika Lake. The camp site was comprised of three large cabins and a main lodge_and fourteen girls of the Pioneer camp were in tents. Camp leadership was under Connie Per- reault of Cobalt as Commandant assisted by Mrs, W. Ross of New Liskeard. Mrs. Dave Herbert of Haileybury was in charge of Pioneers, Mrs. Arnold Armstrong of Englehart was Camp Nurse and Mrs, Jean Gicvanella, Area Camp Advisor, was camp cook. Miss Margaret Oliver of Kirkland Lake was the swimming instructress and Christine Ross of New Lis- keard attended as Junior leader. The camp had an enrolment of 44 Girl Guides, 7 members of the staff and 2 children. The -camp program began at 7:30 a.m. and was a fully planned day of camp management and camp duties, 'swimming, test work, canoeing, boating and hiking. Highlight of the week was a masquerade and a fancy hat party, both fashioned with articles provided by nature. "Upsidedown Day" was greatly en- joyed by all and to round off the camp schedule one full day was provided for a hike away from camp. On Thursday, July 9, Mrs. Jean Giovanella and Mrs. Dave Herbert, District Commissioner, left the camp for the day to go to Barbers Bay near Connaught tto inspect a camp site there. Former Camp Advisor Mrs, W. Grice and Mr. Sanky of Kirkland Lake were visitors to the camp for a day. Co- balt Guides who attended the camp were Rosemary Brown, Genevive Gareau, Beverly Tryon, Frances Parcher, Bernadette Cuillerier, Doreen Draper, Linda Cunning- ham, Patricia Bazinet and Sharon Valley. Cobalt Family Move To Abitibi Canyon Mrs. Harty Smith was hostess to about ten friends and neigh- bours of Mrs. Irene Sparks who is leaving Cobalt shortly to make her home iat Abitibi Canyon. The party was held on Thursday, July 9. Bingo was played duning the even- ing after which a T.V. lamp was presented to Mrs. Sparks by Mrs. Alma Steele . on: behalf of those present. Birthday Party at BaSs Lake Patsy Taylor celebrated her eleventh binthday on Thursday, July 9, by inviting six of her young friends to spend the afternoon at her grandparents cottage at Bass Lake. A- few games were played but most of the time was spent in the water. A lovely lunch was served by Mrs. Taylor assisted by Patsy's grandmother Mrs. C. H. Taylor, Patsy received many love- ly presents from her guests who included Nancy, Clare and Ruth Bazinet, Sharon Cunningham, Ruth Saxton and Carol Cull.
