Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Peckover returned home Jast week-end from a holiday spent at Elliot Lake, Tor- onto and other Southern points. To The Editor July 28, 1959. One thing I can not understand is how this Town rates a tax raise. Is it to pay for some of the mis- takes done by our Council? What I mean by mistakes, is the sidewalk that was put in a while back and was slowly washing down to the lake. I think if we want our streets sanded we should do it some other- way than having our sidewalks wash across them. Sure we got our streets paved but what good are they. They are getting dug all over tthe place which leaves a permanent. hole that our Town workmen are fight- ing a losing battle trying to fill. I do not blame the town men trying to fill these holes. All I am trying to point out is that the coun- cil, in the days when this water- works was laid out, did not look far enough ahead to appreciate a paved road and now you can see the results the way our roads are getting cut up. ' This : seems: a pense trend of councils: in this town if you look back on the sidewalks. It was not put out for tender and they tried to get a cheap job and believe me they did, but we sure paid for it this year when they had to pave over. I would suggest that those who run for council do run jto help this Town and its people and make sure that they are able to handle the job. Not just run for the glory as I do not feel like paying my money out to such things. Right now I feel 'that these taxes are-too high as the Town is no dif- ferent than it was in 45. A disgusted tax payer. Timmins Golfer Wins NOLG Title Mrs. Claire Bernardi, Timmins, won the championship total at the Northern Ontario Ladies' Golf Tournament held last week in Nor- anda. She played in the finals against a junior 17 year old, Miss Birdie Hawkins, North Bay, and won out on the 15th hole. Miss Hawkins put some of the old sea- soned golfers out before reaching the finals. There were 61 players entered, 56 in the regular group and five in the seniors. All reported a good time, good weather and course in excellent condition. Flora McFarlane was in the championship flight, having quali- fied with a 99. The same same score as Mrs. Bernardi. Audrey Bond was in the first flight while Jeanne Murphy entered the sen- iors. Mrs. Murphy won third prize in her section.
