BELGRADE Yugoslavia's Parliament has adopted a law granting each convict a two-week holiday every year. LONDON An ecclesiagtical court has vetoed a plan to install an ultra-modern statue of Christ by sculptor Sir Jacob Epstein in a medieval abbey. The law officer of the Anglican York diocese ruled in favor of 400 parishioners in the northern Eng- lish town of Selby who opposed the proposal of their minister and church wardens to install the "heathen" six-ton marble statue in the local abbey. Epstein, whose chisel has chip- ped out tons of well-known but highly controversial work, had wanted to give the abbey his 24- year-old representation of a thorn- crowned Christ in agony. But the parishioners attacked the square-jawed, 11-foot-high figure as "hideous""', "an inhuman mons- ter" and "a heathen idol by its grotesque size and ugliness". PASSAIC, N. Dear Sir: May we, through the columns of your newspaper, make public the appreciation of the leaders of The Salvation Army for the excellent support given by your publication to the recent Red Shield Appeal. Indications are that. the appeal will again be successful nationally, when delayed campaigns are con- ducted and all returns are in. This gives cause for gratitude to God. The part played by the Fourth Estate in bringing the appeal to the attention of the people is fully realized. Fund raising is not easy, therefore it is essential that the public be made aware of The Sal- vation Army's needs, its purpose and its program. Thank you for your generous and competent assistance. Yours sincerely, L. Bursey, Lieut. Colonel National Campaign Director. "It felt just like running aground except we went a darn sight high- er. "TI was running wide open at about 14 knots and cut the engines fo avoid running up on a whale we sighted. "Then a second whale. traveling directly toward us came up right under us. "Vd say it lifted us a good four feet, but it submerged quickly enough to drop us back in the water on an even keel." The vessel suffered no damage from the incident 18 miles at sea. BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Eleven year-old Timothy Elkouri had. to have a tooth pulled, but he went to a doctor, not a dentist. The tooth belonged to Timothy's brother, Michael, seven. Timothy had grabbed it before Michael had a chance to put it under his pil- low, and apparently to make sure Michael wouldn't find it, he hid it in his ear. Doctors said today the tooth was pulled from Timothy's ear without incident -- and given given back to Michael. PLUMBING _ HEATING ELECTRICAL CONTRACTING ¥ Want Armories for | Community Centre Councillor Wilf Bailey, address- ing the council last Monday night, told members that he had been approached by several members of the recreation commission, to con- tact Public Works Minister Green and enquire if it would be possible for the town to purchase the Arm- ories for use as a recreation centre. The Recreation Commission is hoping that the government will be willing to let the building go for a token price and if this is possible, to renovate it and make it into a recreation centre, instal- ling artificial ice, bowling alleys, and an assembly hall. Councillor Fleming noted that the town was receiving $4500.00 per year taxes for the building and would be foolish to pass up this revenue. Mayor Arthur Cook said that he was against the idea because it would cost just as much to reno- vate the building for recreation purposes as it would to build a completely new structure. Councillor J. J. Whelan defend- ing the suggestion, said, "If this proposal is turned down then tha ~ town will never take the initiative and consturct a centre. There is no place in town to assemble or hold a convention, if we purchased the armories and put in artificial ice, there would be skating in the winterand roller skating in the summer. New Liskeard is against Sunday sports and since Hailey~ bury has already voted for this-we would ibe able to attract sports fans and hockey clubs to our town." Council decided to investigate the plan further' and said that they would welcome the opinion of the towns people on this mat= ters FOR RENT on Latchford St. in : Haileybury TWO BEDROOM OIL HEATED BUNGALOW Available September Ist Phone OS 2-3449 23% For your free copy of Rock of SANDERSON NM Orillia Haileybury, Ont.
