Dent, who on Feb- ruary 1 of this year was retired from the Hydro. Born in Australia 64 years ago, hé served in two world wars and was a member of the Veteran Guards of Canada. He was married on November 12, 1943 to the former Jean Patterson in British Guiana and in 1946 they moved to New Liskeard where they resided for a short time be- fore going to the Upper Notch and Fountain Falls, Hydro plants where Mr. Dent was _ employed. Ten months ago they took up re- sidence at 23 Pyrite St. where he was stricken with a heart attack moody rested at Buffam Funeral Home until 2:30 p.m., August 11, when funeral services were held at St. James Anglican Church with Rev. Nixon of Haileybury officiat- ing. Interment was in New Lis~ keard Cemetery. Pallbearers were S. Speck, W. Fernholm, L. Riley, O. Tanner, L. Steele, and M. Hes- lip. Surviving Mr. Dent are his wife Jean, two sons and one daughter jy a previous marriage, Kenneth of North Bay, Ted of Sudbury and Margaret (Mrs. E. Christo) of Co- fbalt, his mother, Mrs. Sarah Dent, Kent, England; one sister and two brothers in England, and 19 grand- children. A-son Les, predeceased him in 1952. Kiwanis Hold Meetings At Bass Lake As has been the practice of the months of July and August, last Tuesday's meeting of the Kiwanis Club was again held at Kiwanis Beach, Bass Lake, in order to af- ford a better opportunity for club members to carry out this years work programme. After an open air luncheon ithe business session was opened by President Arnold Todd and bills were passed for expenditure made on behalf of two local crippled children. This report showed gross revenues of $1,216.22 of which $582.00 re- presented gate receipts, $80.00 ball club entry fees, $79.22 bingo receipts, $42.00 advertising receipts and $433.00 receipts from the booth. Against these receipts ex- penses, prizes and cost of goods sold at the booth amounted to $928.78 so that the net profit for the event amounted to $287.44. The ball tournament proved to be the largest item of expense costing some $450.00 comprised chiefly of prizes of $350.00, umpire and scorekeeper fees of $70.00, cost of softballs, ball chasers, etc. All in all this years field day was con- sidered to be very successful and from comments received it appear- ed that the public appreciated an event of this nature of which there are all too few held in small towns. together with any profit from the beach for the year will be used for future maintenance and improve- ments. One of the improvements which was considered and which it is hoped will be carried out in the not too distant future is the instal- lation of flush toilets on the beach. An expert was on hand at this meeting to talk to the club mem- bers about an installation of this nature. After the close of the business session the members remained for the balance of the evening to do some work in tthe ball field and beach area. Church Hall : : Supporters of the Cobalt United Chureh who have not had an op- portunity of late to look in on the progress of their new church hall will be pleased to know that it is very near completion. This week they hope to have the wiring fin- ished off and the walls and cup- boards are ready for painting. The sink is already installed as well as the plumbing and the heating sys- tem. By the time 'that 'the Fall season rolls around with its re- sumption of church activities the United Church groups of Cobalt will have a lovely new hall to ac- commodate them. Girls' Fastball Cobalt and Temiskaming Hardware are deep in the fin- als' for the District Ladies' Fastball crown. Liskeard won the first game in the second, 15 - 14. The third game in the best of five series will be held at the Beach Park on Thursday night. Rotary News J. W. P. Gleave, Interprovincial Farm Un- ion Council Chairman, at the 4th Annual Joint Board Meeting of the Board of Directors of the Farm Unions of British Columbia, Sas- katchewan, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario, held in the Soils Building at Ontario Agriculture College, July 14, 15, 16. This is the first time this important conference has been held in Ontario. The purpose of the meeting was to co-ordinate the activities of the five Unions. Featured speakers were A. H. Turner, vice-chairman of the Ag- ricultural Stabilization Board; G. F. Perkins, chairman of the On- tario Farm Products Marketing Board and J. B. Lemoine, presi- dent of L'Union Catholique des Cultivateurs. Mr. F. Perkins said the Farm Products Marketing Board has the authority to impose _ production quota. He also stated that Market- ing Boards cannot control imports as that is a federal matter. "Recommendations from _ this meeting could be very valuable to| the Agricultural Stabilization Board in forming the Govern- ment's proposed legislation on de- ficiency payments,"' said Mr. A. H. Turner. Gordon L. Hill, President of On- tario Farmers' Union expressed concern over leaders of some farm organizations opposing deficiency payments, when only a few months ago they said they favoured defi- ciency payments. James Patterson, Interprovin- cial Farm Union. Council repre- sentative in Ottawa, said the Inter- provincial Farm Union Council have built a reputable organization and had convinced not only farm- ers but people all across Canada, farm union policies are sound and sensible.
