The Rambling Reporter After an absence of just about three weeks from the desk, with- out even a telephone call to check up and see how the boys were do- ing, we are finding it a little hard to get back into the grind again. Took a look for the first time at Elliot Lake and had to get Bill Lickley Jr. to show us the way back to the highway -- of course it' was in the middle of a real good thunderstorm. Took a look at a couple of the new Provincial Parks that Wilf Spooner, Minister of Lands and Forests is expanding and must compliment him and the work his department is doing to provide recreational facilities for the residents and visitors of On- tario. Such centres will prove their worth more in the years to come, even though they were just about filled to capacity this summer, Took a short look at the CNE and found it just about the same as other years, with the noticeable dif- ference that with wet weather last year the attendance was down and with hot weather this year it was down still further. For the first time in all the years we have at-{ tended the Ex, seats on the grand- stand, in all price ranges were available': without having to be} booked week's in advance. Figured the show couldn't be too "hot", so we passed them up. The water sports were a little more interest- ing, especially with our old friend Clint Melville at the "mike". Stopped in at the Toronto Men's Press Club and heard that old time lacrosse and football star Ted Reeve chipping in his two _ bits. worth as to what was wrong with the Argos. Also learned there ap- pears to be a flea epidemic among the cats at the east end of Tor- onto and that they are spreading to the humans. Probably there has been a run on flea powder. Again the hot weather is blamed. Took a 'rattler'? for New York with a half dozen Toronto friends and one from Vancouver, to take in the Seventh Graphic Arts Ex- position to find out what was new in the printing equipment line. The show is-held once every ten years with the newest equipment under power and operating. American as well as European equipment is ex- hibited, some by manufacturers, the remainder by sales agents. On the way over we found one reason why so many are finding it more satisfactory to use the automobile than the train. About 11:45 Satur- day night we thought we would -get a sandwich before turning in and hunted out the Club car. "Sorry, boys", the porter drawled, "we is all locked up. This car 'comes off before we cross the border. You will be able to get something when they put the other |car on at Buffalo." After leaving 'Buffalo we -again found-the Club 'car and made our wants known. "Sorry, boys" the porter drawled, 'We do not serve lunch after mid- night -- I could give you some 'beer though." One bottle of beer 'later 'each we prevailed upon him to for that commodity. "At 'breakfast time we again went to 'the Club car, about 8:30 -- we were running about three hours late. "Sorry boys, our bread, ba- 'con and eggs is all gone. We could 'give you some orange juice or coffee or even beer." So we turned around and went back. to our own car and yearned for the Augumik of 'the Ontario: Northland, that? never seems to run out of anything. Next time we go to New York Gf we have to) will be when the 'weather is a little more on the cool side and the humidity' more suit- able too. As far as we are con- cerned -that: city is for those who HAVE 'to live there. As far as the machinery show went -- with a 'couple of hundred thousand bucks one' could' get the very latest in equipment,' but not any better than |The. Speaker has now in most re- "gards. The show itself occupied itwo floors of the Coliseum, each 'one about three times as large as 'New Liskeard's Curling Rink. The "show, which was closéd to the public, was only open to. those in the trade and by ticket. Twelve thousand persons attended opening day and after that the count regis- tered around the iten- thousand. Among them were printers from every province of Canada, and ! copes narennay bi siete pe cen we " vm -- Thursday, 'September. 1721959" every state in the U.S. At the same time European firms who couldn't get their equipment into the show set up one of their own about eight blocks away, using the slogan "World Peace By World Trade', While some equipment was of interest, most of the equip- ment was passed over as uninter- sting to us or would not fit into our operations. You perhaps wonder why we haven't mentioned anything about 3roadway, on which street our hotel was located. That will make another column -- another week. Soccer Cohailis Soccer Club, in their second year in the league won the semi-final round last week, and will play North Bay Red Shirts in the finals on Sun- day at- New Liskeard Beach Park. Kick-off at 3 p.m=> The locals have had a fair attendance at most of their home games, and are hoping that this final tilt will bring a "Standing-room only" turnout of: fans. HUSKY OIL & REFINING LID. the 3 When most persons think of the Wabi Iron Works the connection is usually with the mining of precious base metals, but this two deck cage, designed and fabricated for a salt mining company, shows thatthe company works as well in other fields.
