Albert Riley gave a report on the joint Cobalt-Tem- agami picnic held Sunday, Sept- ember 13th when members of the two clubs chartered the passenger boat "Aubrey Cousens" and spent 'the day .cruising Lake Temagami stopping off at Camp Wanapetei for luncheon. The weather was a bit on the cool side but the trip was thoroughly enjoyed by all, and it was suggested that this might become an annual event for the two. clubs. John Damiani and Pat Slaght were appointed co-chairmen of a committee to arrange for the District Fall Rally which will be held in Cobalt on the week-end of Oetober 24th. and 25th. Ted Bilodeau reported that orders were being taken for light bulbs in con- nection with the annual Light Bulb campaign being sponsored by the Cobalt Lions Club in this 'rea. Gerry Presse asked for vol- unteers to assist at the Service Club Bingo being held Thursday, September 24th. at the Community Hall. Several members and their wives will be attending the Char- ter Anniversary of the Angeliers Lions Club being held in that com- munity on Wednesday, September 23rd. An invitation was extended by Temagami Club to join with them Tuesday, September 22nd. when they are holding a corn roast at Camp Wassacs. The club agreed to' share one half the cost of an electric ex- haust fan with the Kiwanis club which will be donated to the Com- munity Hall. : There was some discussion re the formation of a Lionettes Club and members wives will be con- tacted shortly to see how may would be interested in the forma- tion of this new group. Friendship Group Meeting The first meeting of the Fall Session for the Friendship Group of the Cobalt United Church was held at the home of Mrs. Al Men- zie on Tuesday, September 15. The members gathered together at 6 p.m. for a "Pot Luck Supper'"' af- ter which the regular meeting took place. President Helen Mallett wel- comed a visitor to the group and turned the meeting over to the committee in charge for the wor- ship service. Lila Wipprecht read the Scripture which was from Se- cond .Timothy, Chapter 3: 10-17. This was followed by a prayer by Francis Leopold. A thought pro- voking reading was given by Signe Kangas entitled '"'Daily Dozen for Worriers"' and the worship service ended with the singing of the hymn "O Master Let Me Walk With Thee". Signe Kangas read the minutes of the June meeting and took the roll call to which 18 members responded. The treasur- er's report was given by Alice Browne and Hildred Welch in the absence of Esther McGugan had sent out two sympathy cards, 12 get well cards and one birthday card during the summer months. The Friendship Group have been asked to cater for a Golden Wed- ding on October 11, and the presi- dent asked for volunteers to help with this, also asked each member for small cakes. A motion was 'made that the October meeting be held at. Northdale Manor if-this meets with the approval of the Manor Board. This will also be the birthday party of the Friendship 'Group. It was decided to hold fu- ture meetings in the new church hall. The Friendship Group was in- formed that the Session of the Church wanted a representative from their members to be on the Church Hall committee and Lila Wipprecht volunteered for this. A motion was made that a fund be set up to be used for purchasing gifts for members who leave town. The meeting adjourned with the Mizpah Benediction after which a quiz*was passed around to test the members' knowledge of the Bible. Aline Mathews was the winner. The evening ended with a lovely lunch. Legion Euchre The Ladies' Auxiliary to the Canadian Legion held their weekly euchre party in the Legion Lounge on Tuesday, September 15, The winners for the evening were: Mrs. Roma Cooper, Mrs. D. Moore, Mrs. J. O'Rourke. Ernest Nathaniel Rhude Funeral services were held at Buffam Funeral Home on Friday September 18 for Ernest Nathan- iel Rhude, Reverend Floyd Rhude Jr. of Burlington, a grandson of the deceased, officiated. Mr. Rhude's death occurred at his home on the Silver Queen Prop- erty on Wednesday, September 16 when he suffered a heart attack. Pallbearers were his four sons, Laurie, Floyd, Dan and Orval Rhude and Alex and Carl Mosher. Interment was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Haileybury. Born 80 ago at Goldenville, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Gideon Rhude and Elizabeth Mc- Pherson. He was a blacksmith by trade and for several years shop foreman at the Hollinger Mines in Timmins until his retirement. He was married in Timmins to the former Mrs. Maude Mosher .and moved to Cobalt where he resided for the last nine years. Surviving are his wife, four sons, Laurie of Kirkland Lake, Floyd of Weston, Dan of Peterborough and Orval of Sarnia, two daughters Grace (Mrs. Eric Hancock) of Burling- ton and Patricia' (Mrs. Martin Ruttan) of Burlington. A brother Clarel résides in Boston and a sister May (Mrs. Simon McMillan) in Nova Scotia. There are also fourteen grandchildren and twelve great' grandchildren, ~~~ ~ School Board The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees, Township School Area of Cobalt and Coleman was held in "were installed by Captain Giovan-~ ella. Applications were made from the local clergymen to teach Religious Instruction in the school and a motion was passed granting these requests. A motion was also passed that the board will supply milk to the pupils carrying lunch in the winter months. This milk is ito replace hot soup that was supplied in former years. Pupils enrolled to date were 345. Ac- counts totalled $7,384.84 and were approved for payment. Mr. H. J. Wark was hired for the position of caretaker's helper. Niemela--Tervo Miss Anita Tervo, formerly of Cobalt and now of Sudbury was united in marriage to Mr. Leonard Niemela in a double ring ceremony m Saturday, September 19 at 3p.m. in St. Mathews Lutheran Church, Sudbury. The bride is the daughter of Mr. Pekka Tervo and the latte Mrs. Tervo of Lockerby and the groom is the son of Mrs. Helvi Niemela and the late Mr. Niemela of Lockerby. Reverend Korhonen officiated. Bouquets of pink and yellow gladioli decorated - the church. Given in marriage by her uncle Mr. Voitto Tapanila, the bride looked lovely in her wedding gown of white nylon chiffon over taffeta which was floor length and fashioned with a scoop neckline trimmed wth appliques of lace and rhinestones and with long sleeves. Her veil was shoulder length and she carried 1a bouquet of red roses. The bride's sister Brita Tervo was maid of honour and Nellie. Niem- ela bridesmaid. They were gowned alike in dresses of embossed taf- feta designed with cowl neckline with a bow and streamers at the back. They--wore matching feather hats and carried bouquets of white mums. Miss Tervo's dress was blue~and Miss WNiemela's rose. Groomsman was George Niemi. At the reception which was held in the Finnish Hall at Long Lake, the brides aunt Mrs. V. Tapanila received the guests in a brown ensemble with white feather hat and Mrs. Neimela who also receiv- ed wore a brown sheath dress with matching accessories. The bride and groom left for a wed- ding trip to Niagara Falls. For travelling the bride chose a light blue wool sheath dress with jack- et and matching feather hat and a corsage of pink roses. Upon their return they will reside in Lock- erby. Cobalt Guides Resume Meetings First Company Cobalt Girl Guides met for their first meeting of the Fall on Monday, September 21 in the Community Hall. After the singing of God Save the Queen and repeating of the Guide Pray- er and Promise, two new mem- bers Judy Reise and Paulette Lev- eille, were welcomed to Guides by Captain Jean Giovanella. Guides were registered after which Cap- tain Giovanella gave a brief re- sume of the summer camp activ- ities and hoped that this year they would work hard and well for guiding. A few games were played . before company leaders Gareau are the Company Leaders and Patrol Leaders «are Doreen Draper, Bernadette Cuillerier and Frances Parcher. A sing song and Taps ended the meeting. Few people realize the benefits and solid foundation Guiding gives to a young girls life. It embraces practically every aspect in life. The series of tests in cooking and sewing prepares them to be better homemakers, handicrafts are in- troduced to them and each year at their camps they are introduced to life in our great outdoors and the study of nature. Health, swimming instructions and life saving which are so important to our young people are also tests which a guide prepares them to be ibetter citi- zens and to be more tolerant with each other andthe world at large.- It is hoped that with a new yea of guiding just Jbeginning, more Thursday, October 1, 1959 TB Association Holds Meeting The regular meeting of the Temiskaming Tuberculosis Asso- ciation was held in Kirkland Lake on September 23, at which time it was decided to issue cards pro- viding for a free chest X-ray any- where in Ontario to positive re- actors in tuberculin testing. Dr. Harris reported that a tuberculin testing program is being carried out and is-to be expanded. The secretary reported on the Conference held in Toronto. The theme "Let's Face It" referred to a need for future expansion of program into all respiratory dis- eases. Being so closely related to girls will take advantage of ithe opportunity to join up with the First Company Cobalt Girl Guides. While the death rate from tuberculosis is much lower and the use of new drugs and improved treatment has shortened the stay in sanatorium, the number,of cas- es of tuberculosis being discover- ed has not dimished appreciably in the past ten years and the ex- pansion into the field of other res- piratory diseases is considered a natural trend in the prevention and control of tuberculosis. A meeting of the Associations from North Cochrane, South Coch- rane and Temiskaming will be held at St. Mary's On The Lake Sanatorium on October 18, at which time Dr. C, W. L. Jeanes, Executive Assistant, of Canadian Tuberculosis Association in Otta- wa will be the speaker.
