United Church of Canada "Urges Safe Driving Habit Sober, safe Christian driving, particularly during the Christmas and New Year holiday season, is being promoted by The United Church. of Canada again this year. Sparked by The United Church's Board of Evangelism and Social Service, the campaign will include newspaper, radio and TV advert- ising, poster-board showing and strong support from United Church pulpits. "Keep ithe thought of Christ in Christmas"' is the theme of the campaign, which will emphasize the moral responsibility of Christ- ians to keep the highways safe from accidents. Moderator of The United Church of Canada, the Right Rev. Angus J. MacQueen, in a statement said: "There is an old adage 'Noblesse oblige' - nobility obligates. This can be put in a simpler form - ev- ery right has a corresponding duty, and every privilege a correspond- ing responsibility. Perhaps no- where is this to be seen more clearly than in our modern mach- ine age. We are a nation on wheels, and the safety of each person de- - pends upon the trustworthiness of others. "Most of us in Canada have a religious faith. This means that we have recognized moral prin- ciples, and that we are expected to apply our religion in everyday, practical affairs. To be more spec- ific, it means that we_ shouldn't leave our religion in -Church on Sunday, or at home on top of the Bible when we go out for a drive. If it is a vital religion it is for all the time and for everywhere. "The Christian should drive carefully and soberly and with due regard for the safety of himself and others because all life is 'sa- ered. This is one practical way in which he can love his neighbour as himself. The appeal is much WAINT ADS FOR SALE ix FOR SALE -- Christmas trees for sale. Apply Don's White Rose Ser- vice Station. We are to respect. the lives and welfare of others, all of whom are God's children like ourselves. Furthermore, the Christian should obey Christ's law of love. This is quite different from liking everybody or getting sentimental over people in general. It implies certain practical virtues - court- esy, patience, kindness, thought- fulness of others, and good temper. These are the opposite of rudeness, irritation, showing off, selfishness and anger. The one type of behav- iour makes for safety and well- being; the other type makes for danger and death: "Of course a good Christian is also a good Citizen. He does not defy the laws, or despise them as nuisances or traps, but realizes that they are necessary supports for a well. ordered. society; - that they are not to restrict him. but in the long run to give him and _ his fellow men greater freedom and security. Ski Club Works On New Tow Rope The electrical work at the North- ern Ski Club will be completed this week. The tow rope is expect- ed Thursday and will be put up during the week-end. The executive will appreciate any help that skiers can give dur- ing the week-end in order that all preparations may be completed so that skiing may be Commenced next week. Woodlot Owners In Good Position The private woodland owner is in a very good position to cash in on the ever-increasing demand for wood. This is the conclusion reach- ed by Reforestation Supervisor W. K. Fullerton, of the Ontario Depart- ment of Lands and Forests here, reviewing the woodlot business. "In the Parry Sound Forest Dis- trict, it is estimated that 9.9 mil- lion cubic feet of timber can be cut from Crown lands each year without depleting our timber re- sources,'"' he points out. "However, on private®iands which comprise 42 per cent of the area of this dis- trict, it is estimated that 47.6 mil- lion cubic feet of timber can be cut each year without depleting the timber resources. This means, of course, that owners. of private woodlands have a decided advan- tage when it comes to selling for- est products to the many estab- listed mills in Muskoka and Parry Sound, "Generally speaking, private lands were originally alienated from the Crown for farming pur- poses. Even though much of this land is unsuited to agriculture, the soils are better for timber growing than the remaining Crown lands. "Secondly, most of the private lands are. easily accessible for harvesting forest products, com- pared to Crown lands. "Thirdly, landowners-have an op- portunity to manage their wood- lots for optimum timber produc- tion. "These facts all add up to the point that the private woodland owner is in a very good position to cash in on the ever-increasing de- mand for wood. "Even though the amount of timber available for cutting on private lands in nearly five times the volume available on Crown lands, it is apparent that private woodlots are not producing nearly the volume of timber they are cap- able of. Woodlot owners who are producing forest products are not DECEMBER FAVORS HAILEYBURY CANADIAN LEGION ANNUAL ~ New Year's Dance 9:00 - CAMPSALL'S ORCHESTRA ADMISSION $2 PER PERSON Tickets available at Anderson's: Gift Shop, New Liskeard, Whitby's Drugs, Haileybury, 31 .-- .1959 REFRESHMENTS TO RENT -- In Haileybury, four room heated apartment, 4515 Co- balt. 40tt EMPLOYMENT WANTED WANTED -- Will remove snow from 'driveways and service sta- tions.
