Strong Stalls Cubs New Liskeard Cubs got off to a limping start in their bid for the Kirkland and District League Championship and trail Holy Name Irish by a full game. The Cubs met the bolstered Irish on Sunday for the first game in the best of seven series, and came home with. an 8-8 tie. In the first period the Cubs left the ice with a 3-1 lead on goals by Brown, Notter and Christianson. Irish marksman was Skalecki. The end of the second stanza still had the Cubs in the lead, two ahead of the Irish. Larouche, Not- ter and Glashan kept the Cubs ahead, while Baker, Savage and Melong kept the Irish in the game. Holy Name scored three in the final period while Glashan got the only Cub goal, and the game end- ed in a 7-7 tie. In the over-time period Belan- ger got the early counter, and the Cubs staved off a determined Irish attack until Baker scored with less than a minute to go. On Tuesday night the Cubs met a pepped up Irish and came out on the short end of a 4-2 score. The Cubs moved into an early lead when Billy Glashan lofted a face-off over the head of the Holy Name goalie in the first minute of play. Two minutes later Melong was left uncovered in front of the Lis- keard goal and converted a pass out to knot the count. Hamilton picked up 'the only goal in the second from a melee in front of Jelly. Skalecki and Fretz added one each in the third to give the Irish a 4-1 lead. Filipchik got another for the tiring Cubs with less than two minutes to play, but time ran out with the Cubs still trying. He had more shots and harder shots to handle than Grguros. His effectiveness was particularly BD parent on close in shots. The Cubs ran into the same kind of close checking that stalled their attack against the Kirkland Lake Lions, and their fans are confi- dent that they will find the com- bination to beat the Irish. It took just a little faster skating against the Lions, maybe this is the ans- wer against the Irish. Brander and Ziliotto were key men on the Holy Name team, and it was on their defensive play and clearing that the Cub attack broke.
