Skaters Practice for Annual Carnival Thursday, March 10, 1960 The Haileyburian Holy Name Irish Champs Hliminate Cubs in Five. New Liskeard Cubs lost the fifth game in the _ best-of-seven series for the right 'to represent the Kirkland and District League in the Northern Ontario playoffs, but were in the hunt until the last few minutes of play. Holy Name Irish completed the series with a strong game, win- ning 5-2 and will move on to.seek further honors which could end with an All-Ontario Championship for the Kirkland Lake team. The Cubs needed a win to stay in the series and played one of the best games in the finals, but their all-out bid broke on one of the strongest defence combinations seen here in years. : The game started with two goals which could possibly set some sort of a record. Duff took the puck from the first face-off and drifted in on Jelly for an easy score. Wat- son duplicated the play on the sec- ond face-off and blasted one past a surprised Grugaras. Savage add- ed another for the Irish three min- utes later and that was all for the first period. The Cubs gave notice that they were up for this game, and were getting away from the back- cheeking forwards, but ran up against a stone wall defence and} top goal-tending by the Irish net minder. _ Holy Name scored the only goal in the second period, and the Cubs in their most determined assault in the game bottled the Irish up in their own end of the rink for most of the 20 minutes but could not get the puck in the net. Liskeard was still pressing, and : trying to reduce the 3-1 lead held by the Irish, and were finally re- warded when Brown broke through the Irish defence, swooped around the net and back-handed a score to make it 3 - 2. Ziliotto's charging rush in mid- period relieved the pressure on the Irish, and they sat on their lead with only occasional forays to- wards the Cub net. On one of these a clearing pass hit Baker. and bounced onto the end of his stick for a quick and unexpected goal and the championship for the Irish. Liskeard Cubs had trouble: with the Irish all season, and the chief reason for this was the excellent 60 minute play of big Larry Zili- otto. With the pick-up of Frank Bran- der the Irish had the strongest de- fence combination in the league, and when the Cubs lost Glen Wat- son and Steel through injuries, they were really in a rough spot. A bright spot in the play was the excellent work in the nets of Barry Jelly who ended the season as top tender in the league and didn't suffer any hurt to his reputation in the play-offs.
