C.G.I.T. meeting in Hail- eybury, Monday March 4th. Beverly Childs led the group in the C.G.I1.T. Purpose, Hymn and Prayer. Eight members answer- ed the roll. Susan Westlake read the minutes of the last meeting and Brenda Stringer gave the Treasurer's report. Plans were finalized for the World Frienship 'Tea sponsored by both the C.G.I.T. and Mission Band, to be held Saturday, March 19, at 3:00 p.m. in St. Andrew's Church Hall. The group then worked on pos- ters as part of their Mission Study project. The meeting closed with taps. St. Patrick's Day Mixed Curling Plans are going forward for the annual St. Patrick's Mixed curl- ing at the Cobalt-Haileybury Curl- ing Club for Friday night, March 18th. Owing to the _ inter-town bonspiel being played in Hailey- bury on Thursday evening local Irishmen will have to celebrate St. Patrick's Day on Friday. Games will start at 7 o'clock and the teams will be picked upon ar- rival. This annual affair has al- ways been one of the best local spiels and a great deal of interest is shown by all members who are out to beat the Irish on this their day of the year. | Charlton; - | Cobalt; Thursday, March 17, 1960 Two Local Students Win Awards in Public Speaking Two Haileybury students were successful in winning first place awards in the Zone finals in the Canadian Legion public speaking competitions held recently in New Liskeard. John Atchison came first in Grade one to six division. Other competitors included Carol Knight, Rheal Leveille, Sacred Heart School, New Liskeard; Jam- es Dunning, St. Patrick's School, Cobalt; Lorraine Armstrong, En- glehart; Andre Berdux, Elk Lake. Honorable mention was given to Rheal Leveille for what the judges termed "an admirable effort.' Ronald Gravel, Holy Cross school, Haileybury, was the winner in Grades Seven and Hight section. Other contestants were Glen White, Sandra McCullough, En- guehart; Claire Ayotte, St. Mich- ael's school, New Liskeard; and Robert Bain, Elk Lake. Ruth Ann Bott of Englehart was the winner in Grades nine and ten, the only other contestant being Nicole Hurtubise of Elk Lake. With two contestants in Grades 11 and 12, Billie Peters of New Liskeard was adjudged the win- ner. The other contestant was Stan- ley Webb of Englehart. Judges for the competition were Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Kelly and M. J. Moran. The four winners will go on to the district finals which will be held in South Porcupine Sunday, Mareh 20. Kiwanis Karnival Attracts Talent The Annual Kobalt Kiwanis Kar- nival which has always proven so popular with the younger people of the town was held at the Cobalt Arena on Friday, March 4. The program featured costume competition, children's races, broomball, hockey and inter-school relay racing. Two teams from the Cobalt Min- or Hockey League put on a pleas- ing hockey match which ended in a 1-1 tie. Goal scorers were Bob Leveille and Jim Dunning. An excellent game of broomball was staged by two all star teams from the Girls' Broomball League, ending with a 3-2 score.
