Speckled Trout Season Starts on Saturday "This Saturday, April 30th, will see many district anglers making their way ito local streams and lakes. The avid trout fisherman will probably make a two day sojourn into the bush ito his fav- ourite lake. Opening day of the trout season for a large portion of thie anglers; 'however, will mean a-short trip to the nearest pond or stream. The whole family will sprobably ibe taken along for a day's outing or a few hours of fishing for this fine game species. With this letter group in mind the Department of Lands and For- ests at North Bay embarked upon a scheme two years ago 'to improve their take-home catch, Consequent- ly, 25,000 yearling trout, four to six inches in length, were held at the local fish hatchery for an extra year instead of stocking them. These fish now average ten inches in length and will run from two to three to the pound in weight. This plan originated when there was still a seven inch limit on speckled trout. This limit has now been removed. The object of the plan is to make available to anglers a take-home size trout entirely independent of any nat- ural. growth in the waters in local and easily 'accessible waters cannot produce sufficient growth under natural conditions to meet the demand for trout fishing. Some of the waters, which are to be stocked, are not trout waters and survival of trout beyond July Ist is mot expected. It is unlikely, hewever, that many of these trout will be left by this time. It is'ex- pected and hoped that anglers will remove a large percentage of these stocked two-year-olds long before survival becomes a prob- lem. For those anglers, who claim that hatchery trout taste of liver, it is pointed out that the two-year olds have been fed on special formulated pellets with an occa- sional weekly feeding of liver to supply the necessary vitamins. Few anglers will be able to deter- mine a taste difference from wild fish, Most anglers won't be. con- cerned as long as they can have the enjoyment of catching a. few nice trout. In addition to these larger fish approximately 25,000 yearlings || will also be 'stocked in district trout waters as a supplement to natural populations. Conservation Officers will be on hand 'to count the number of two-year old. trout recovered by anglers in order to determine the success of the scheme for future plans on the fol- lowing waters listed in order of Name, Township and Location: Reid Lake, Firstbrook, West of Cobalt; Fourmile Pond, Gillies Li- mit, #11 Hwy. west of Johnston Lake; Gravel Pit Pond, Law, #11 Hwy. opposite Hornet Lake; White Fawn Lake, Widdifield, #11 Hwy.. Mrs. Vera Cassidy led the responsive reading and ended this with a prayer. The sing- ing of 'Crown Him With Many Crowns" concluded this portion of the meeting. In the absence of the president, Mrs.- Agatha Cameron, vice-presi- dent, Mrs. Elva Aspden presided over the' meeting which was at- tended by nineteen members and one guest. An. itemized account was given by Mrs. Bron Scully of the pur- chases made by the committee for the church kitchen. These are all welcome additions to any kitchen and will be a great boon to groups using the church kitchen. It was announced that the Rum- mage Sale would be held on May 13 and 14. A motion was made that. the Friendship Group re-affiliate with the W.M.S. The meeting adjourn- ed and a contest was played dur- ing the' social hour that followed. Other waters to re- ceive an allotment of two-year old trout some time this spring are: Timber L., Balsam Creek, Four Mile (Knight's) Creek, Duchesney Creek, Antoine' Creek, Fournier's Creek, Eighty Acre Lake, Twist Lake, Blue Lake, Cache Creek, Pike Creek, Wabi Creek, Campten (Horse-shoe) Lake, Mirror Lake, Jocko River, Salter Lake, Pot Hole Lake, Thirty Acre Lake, North River (3 locations), Doran Creek, Little Sturgeon (Sand Dam), Deer Creek, Veuve River, Number Two Lake. - A total of 50,000 speckled trout twill be planted this spring. Half of them will have to put on some growth and survive until next year, the other half will be ready for the cree] immediately. Mine Timber The beginnings of increased mining activity in the Cobalt area is reflected this spring through the demand for mine lagging and timbers. Altholzh mining operations are not yet in full swing, 'there is renewed interest in the area as a result of new discoveries of silver ore bodies, and be- cause of an expected rise in the price o! this mineral on the world market. Consider- able exploration work is now in progress and it seems prob- able that several inactive mines will be brought. into production once more. These indicate promise of increased employment in the mines of Cobalt and related woods op- erations this year. are among the factors which_ COUPON My guess is that the ice will be out of Lake Temiskaming The Haileyburian Page 3. Mission Society Elects President of the annual meeting of the United church WMS held recently in the Rich» mond Hill United church, showed that many of those attending and taking part were former North-- erners. These included the newly elect ed president, Mrs. L. R. Anderson, a resident of Cochrane for many years, Dr. Margaret Arkinstall) Mrs. H. Purdy, Mrs. G. Carder, and Rev. J. A. C. and Mrs. Kell, who served the Cochrane charge in the 1940's. The minister of the Richmond Hill church, Rev. C. G. Higginson, was the first ordained minister in the Clute-Island Falls territory in 1982. An interesting sidelight is that the Richmond Hill church was built in 1882, when the area was served by Rev. Peter Addison, grandfather of Rev. A. P. (Peter) Addison, well-known in the north during the years he served the churches of Haileybury, Iroquois Falls, Timmins and who is now in Elliot Lake. Rev. Dr. Peter Ads dison, the second in the continuing line of Addison ministers, was a well-known Toronto minister. The' delegates at the meeting were wel comed by Mrs. Peter Addison. The continuity of Addison membership' in the Richmond Hill church since 1882 has been broken only briefly when the present Addisons who are cousins of the family, were resident in another section.
