The New Liskeard septic tanks, the Georgian Bay Airways base and the Agricultural Society build- ings are all surrounded by water, as are homes at the south*end of May Street. _ The water is lapping at the walls © @e curling club and the Sports- <#S Show scheduled to take place in tthe arena later this month has been postponed. Residents of the Dawson Point Road near New Liskeard are get- ting worried. Things may get worse and some are preparing to evacuate. ' At Latchford the Montreal River is splashing the bottom of Highway a1 where it crosses the dam. Hy- dro is keeping an eye on the situ- ation, but hydro officers here sseem confident that the dam will stand. ' According to the New Liskeard hydro office, the flow on the Mon- treal River has been measured at 1,500 cubic feet per second. This they say indicates a gradual - in- Crease in the water level can be expected, but no TV type tidal wave. Reports from power plants on the main river emptying into Lake Temiskaming indicate that the flood peak may not have yet been reached. The Quinze River is re- ported to be more than ten feet over the usual high water level. At Angliers it is expected that more stop logs will have to be removed The waters from the Larder Lake' dam have not yet reached New Liskeard, but are expected to be here to-day via the Blanche River. : | Ubald LaChapelle, Reeve of Casey, said that ithe White River is the highest he has ever seen it. _ Ontario hydro has evacuated its employees from the Indian Chutes plant near Elk Lake and the build- ings are flooded. \ At Haileybury hundreds of pulp logs broke away from a boom near Quite frequently, newspapers re- print or borrow news items from other papers. This week, we are doing just that. We are reprint- ing some interesting items from our local rival, the Haileybury High School News, and as the weeks go on, we hope to do more of it, in order to give the people of Haileybury an insight into what the students are doing. We will start with an editorial by editor Murray Black. "Probably the most exciting event that has occurred since our last edition is the news that we shall probably have a new build- ing to house the hopefuls of H.H.S. To all. those who have been in any way responsible for this achievement our heartiest con- gratulations, A recent project brought forth by the school board is a contest to see who has made the great- the splint factory, and have added to the damage done to the dock area by the flood. Installations at the Rotary swim- ming area have been badly dam- aged. Many private docks along the Lakeshore Road have beeen covered with water and smashed by floating logs. In the rural areas many con- cession roads are flooded or im- passable due to mud. Quebec resi- dents are taking their lives in their hands and whizzing across the al- legedly out-of-order bridge at Judge, rather than grind several miles around ithe muddy and bumpy detour. Liskeard area residents who suf- fer=flood damage don't have much chance of collecting any compen- sation. When the dam was put in at the foot of Lake Temiskaming years ago, the government paid off property owners up to the 595 contour. This means that most of the property around the White- wood -- Armstrong irftersection can be flooded if the dam puts the stop logs in place, without any government compensation. To ithe boy or girl who has achieved this honour a prize will be donated by the Hail- eybury Board of Education, The volley-ball tournament is now under way with most of the students happily participating in the exciting games. One of the important changes in the sched- ule_is the formation of the noon hour® league for those who do not go home at noon.- The other league as usual, is played after school is dismissed. When the reg- ular schedule is over, the winner of each league plays off to deter- mine the champions of the school. I would now like to take this opportunity to personally thank all those who have in any way contributed to the improvements of the. school paper. General Assembly by BOB BROWN On January 29, the students of Haileybury High School held their first general assembly in the school auditorium. The pro- gramme included entertainment and a student council meeting. The gfternoon 'programme began with a group of Grade IX girls singing two hit songs 'Lipstick on Your Collar' and 'Lipstick, Candy, and Rubber Soled Shoes"., This was followea by the 'Boys with the Beat", Bob Grozelle and Dave Black who sang "Have I Told You Lately -That I Love You". The Television programme "Live a Borrowed Life'? was also enacted, with Tony Cassidy as Moderator, Jack Buffam, Lynn St. Louis, Harvey Westlake and Sally MacDonald the panel. The unknown. identities to be discov- ered were our. principal, G. L. Cassidy, Leo Labine and oddly enough, Adolph Hitler. The game provided something different and gave everyone a great deal of entertainment, along wth a few laughs, The most important part of the afternoon was the Student Coun- cil meeting, with almost a per- fect attendance of Student Council members. At-the meeting two members of the Council» were picked to go to Sudbury to attend a Student Council Rally. Sally Whitby and Real St. Cyr'were the chosen candidates. Following this a plea was made to the school to Bee the Operetta whole heart- edly, and everyone in the student body pledged 'to. do so, and also to give all possible help and assist- ance to Mr. Cassidy and Miss Kel- ler to make the performance a success. The meeting was adjourned and if 'the: afternoon exercises brought to a close by two more songs by. the 'up and coming. amateur - enter- tainers, Bob. Grozelle and Dave Black. A great deal of thanks goes to Tony Cassidy for organizing the af- ternoon's entertainment and also acting' as Master of Ceremonies, and to Mr. Cassidy for his co-op- eration concerning the assembly. To sum up, the afternoon was a big success and I'm sure the stu- dents will be anxiously looking for- ward-to the next one, . Because We're Young By Carol Carlson Because we're young we have no fears Of hardship in the coming years. They seem to us as far away As World War Three or ne Day, bs Though often talk of these one hears. To talk of toil we block our ears; Therefore our elders render jeers, We've wandered from the narrow way: Because we're young. Someday we too shall have our fears, But we shall shed no bitter tears, Though youth has swiftly flown away, And somewhat slow our pace ap- pears. Till then with fun we'll fill the years Because we're young. Thursday, May 12, 1960 Oratorical Finals At High School An important event of this week will be the Oratorical Finals at the Haileybury.
