"Austria has been reported over- seas as being a land of gamblers"' Walker said. "The distribution of a stamp with a race horse on it will _seem to prove it." OTTAWA -- A new process for producing sparkling applejack has been invented by the National Re- search Council, the Commons re- Search committee was informed. The council's Patents Handbook, tabled in the committee, said the new process makes it possible to use dessert varieties of North Am- erican apples for good apple cider. Previously, special varieties of apples were required to prdouce good cider and the dessert types grown on this continent were not suitable, LAKE LOUISE, Alta. -- Light- fingered guests lift about 900 tea- spoons and lightheaded chipmunks gobble up 15,000 poppies from the Chateau Lake Louise each sum- mer. The Iceland poppies are suppose to be perennials, says office man- ager Bill Ruff, '"'but the chipmunks eat the seeds and the beds of PHOTOS INDUSTRIAL COMMERCIAL WEDDINGS IDENTIFICATION 'PICTURE FRAMING Enlarging Papers, Developers and Supplies Mounting Board Temiskaming Printing Company Limited MI 7-4313 New Liskeard flowers have to be replaced every year."' The maitre d'hotel, German-born Hans Marshall, gallantly calls the guests who take teaspoons '"'sou- venir collectors." "We started last season -with 1,800 teaspoons and at the end of the season 900 were gone." Soup spoons and demitasse cups also disappear but the 'teaspoons are favorites for the collectors. WINNIPEG Illustrations of events and symbols of church his- tory are being carved in the four main oak doors of the new St. George's Anglican Church in Win- nipeg. The carvings are being done by Professor C. C. Richards of the University of Manitoba's School of Art. The first door depicts the four Gospellers and shows St. Matthew with the figure of a man, St. Mark with a lion, St. Luke with an ox, and St. John with an eagle. British saints who lived before the arrival of St. Augustine in 597 are shown on the second door. They include St. Alban, St. Patrick, St. Columba and St. David. The third deor commemorates the Reformation and depicts the persecution of martyrdom of John Wycliffe, William Tyndale, Cran- mer and Bishops Latimer and Rid- ley. The fourth door is Canadian. In- cluded in it will be Bishop Inglis of Nova Scotia, the first bishop of the Anglican Communion outside of Great Britain; John West, mis- sionary to Indians and to the early Selkirk settlers; Rev. Edward James Peck, missionary to the Eskimos who reduced their langu- age to a system of syllabics; and Archbishop Machray, and will com- memorate the 1890 Winnipeg con- ference, precursor of the general synod, TIMBER BAY, B.C. -- Mrs. Ver- onica Dowling lost her job when the Ground Observer Corps was recently disbanded in favor of ra- dar. But she continues to do the Same work because she isn't con- vinced the task can be handled completely 'by science. From her home on Cortes Island in the Gulf of Georgia she reported 17,777 aircraft over the years to the Vancouver RCAF filter centre. Her office-living room 'has 40 scale models of aircraft and a lib- rary of posters and magazines on aerial matters, Miss Dowling -- she prefers miss although she is a widow and a grandmother -- is also a farmer, fisherman, logger and backsmith. She insists a human observer can do things that radar cannot. As an example, she recalls once seeing a plane that appeared to be in trouble. Later the RCAF air-sea Bucke fire department turned out as a safety measure when this gasoline transport tipped into the ditch outside of New Liskeard on Saturday morning. Hundreds of gallons spilled over the road shoulder when the truck overturned. No one was hurt: and the Dept. of Highways' crane righted the carrier. Temiskaming Has High Market Rating NEW YORK, July 27 -- Timis- kaming District stands out as a solid growing market, according to a national study of business activ- ity, just released. Significant gains were recorded in its trading area during the past year as local residents, armed with better incomes and a high rate of employment in most fields, indulg- ed in large-scale buying. The picture is revealed in a new, copyrighted survey of buying pow- er, made by Sales Management. It covers every section of Canada and the United States. The extent of this strength in Timiskaming District is to be seen in the size of local earnings in 1959. After deduction of personal income taxes, local residents had a net, spendable income of $71,800,000. What this represented, on a per family basis, was determined by dividing the dollar volume by the number of households. It came to $5,790 per household. That was more than the per household income throughout Can- ada, $5,537. With more money available to them than before, people spent more freely. As a result, business was good for the retail merchants in Timis- kaming District. Their sales vol- ume came to $43,880,000 in the year, well over the $43,699,000 of 1958. rescue service reported an aircraft missing+-She was able to give di- rections that narrowed the search area. The pilot was found alive. Another time she heard a faint ery for help. It turned out-to be a fisherman who had lost his boat in rough seas and was attempting to swim ashore. He was rescued. However, she has rad her diffi- culties. She once reported to her superiors in Vancouver that she could not go-out to check the exact |} direction of a passing aircraft be- cause cougars were roaming near- by. NEW LISKEARD 20.227 92 Although most retail lines report- ed bigger sales volumes, the best results were in the durable goods field, which staged a recovery from its 1958 setback. The survey makes use of a "'buy- ing power index" to show how much retail business is 'actually done in each community, as com- pated with its etsimated full ca- pacity. This 'weighted figure is based on such factors as income, sales and population. It - lists Timiskaming District with an index of .2882, as able to produce that per cent of Canada's business. Since less than that was done last year, .2718 per cent it follows that a considerable amount of the local business potential is still ito be realized. us Economists are predicting that consumers will continue their pre- sent rate of spending for goods and services during the months just ahead. They see a slight weaken- ing of confidence due to the world situation, ruling out the likelihood of any substantial increase in the spending pattern for the moment. Woman Injured. Mrs. H.
