Pelangio, two local sparkplugs behind: movement to set up-a boating club in the district's largest and best- known lake, told the Speaker over the holiday week-end that a meet- ing is to be called at 8 p.m. on Thursday in. the Hotel Haileybury. "The meeting is for the purpose of probing the feelings' of - boat owners using the lake as to wheth- er they would like to have a Tim- iskaming Yacht Club established,"' Mr. Whelan says. "If there is enough interest the details of its formation will be discussed.' He said a special invitation was being made to New Liskeard boat owners and those of other neigh- boring Ontario and Quebec com- munities to become associated with the idea and that membership would be open to all users of- Lake Timiskaming. Mr. Whelan also a town council- lor, stated: '"'We feel it will be such a tourist attraction that municipali. ties themselves will want to contri- bute to its establishment." Preliminary hopes are for: a membership of 400 or. more owners of yachts, boats and canoes. Event- ual hopes are that each of the par- ticipating groups from municipali- ties on the lake will provide their own mooring jetties, gas and oil facilities for boats, as well as for the eventual building of a club house for members. Apart from promoting the lake, one of the major objectives of the group, it is believed, will be the spearheading of a drive to have the: Waters. cleared of stray pulp- wood logs. A yacht club, however, will be nothing new for the town. Hailey- bury is: believed to: have had an active boating club before: the 1922 fire: Mr. Whelan: says much interest has been displayed in the idea so far. If established the club would also promote services for boaters: in trouble on. the water, water saféty, search and rescue facilities, wea- ther advice and other forms of aid to the boating public. Interested parties are being urged to attend Thursday's prelim- inary meeting. John Marchese won the grueling 10 mile bike race at New Liskeard Beach last week. John lapped the field early in the race and had little trouble-in holding it in the final lap. About a dozen entered the race and most finished. The races were handled by the New Liskeard Jaycees and the trophy donated by the Chamber of Commerce.
