t } { Northern Chambers of Commerce Demand Tri-Town Bypass Action Sixty delegates representing 23 Chambers of Commerce attended the annual meeting of the Northern Ontario Associated Chambers of ~ Commerce held in Timmins: last : 5, ~ They approved a resolution that the Department of Highways be urged to start immediately on the most economical, direct route for a@ bypass around New Liskeard, Haileybury and Cobalt. Arnold Hawkins, chairman of the Industrial Committee of the New Liskeard Chamber, and the only person present from the Tri-Town district was asked to comment on the motion before it was passed. He said, "The New Liskeard Chamber of Commerce is in favor of having the bypass completed as soon as possible so that we may be relieved of all heavy transport traffic.' His statement was ap- plauded by the delegates and the resolution immediately passed. ' Members also approved resolu- tions for a direct highway link be- tween Sudbury and Timmins as a continuation of Highway 69 during the 1960-61 winter season. The reso- lution said that the road would "Imk into one common market area more than 250,000 people." Also approved were resolutions by the Kapuskasing and District Chamber to request the Ontario Northland Railway Commission to extend the ONR from North Bay to Georgian Bay, to extend its main line passenger, mail and ex- press service from Cochrane to Hearst and to have municipal or provincial governments make tax} concessions to property owners wishing to improve their property. A resolution by the Cochrane Board of Trade to extend Highway. 574 from Norembega 60 miles east to meet the Quebec road system was passed. Approved were resolutions by the Porcupine Chamber of Commerce to: Request the Departments of Lands and Forests and Mines to build nature -trails in provincial parks and other areas. Petition the Ontario government to raise the jurisdiction of the di- vision courts to $500 and $1,000 so that these courts may be of, more service to merchants and wage- earners. Request increased participation by the provincial government in its program of surface geology -re- search and airborne magneto- meter surveys. Require door-to-door salesmen who cannot be controlled under items of the Municipal Act to ob- tain an annual provincial licence and post a bond of not less than $1,000. , The Chambers will support an advertising campaign to promote northern produce. W. Roy Thompson, -- director, Kirkland Lake- District Chamber, of Commerce, who raised the reso- lution from the floor, won unani- mous endorsement from Chambers on his 'Buy Northern'? motion. Mr. Thompson pointed out the} amount of money spent on im- porting goods into Temiskaming district, which goods can, and are being produced here, might be kept in the area, if residents were more "loyal" to their own pro- ducers. ' z . "Buy Northern' campaign will}. be sponsored by the Northeastern | Ontario Development Association, of which Mr. Thompson is a mem- ber.
