Page 6 The Haileyburian Hunting Fair to Good According With the opening of the hunting stjison in most areas of Ontario, reports range from fair to good for birds and beasts, according to officials of the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests, and hunters. Here's what.seems in prospect: Moose: Very good. Among the top spots in Ontario are the Gow- ganda and Gogama Districts, the area around Lake Abitibi, Lake of the Woods, almost anywhere along the new stretch of Highway No. 17 from just north of Sault Ste. Marie almost into Port Arthur- Fort William. As a matter of fact, motorists covering the 170 mile stretch from Agawa 40 White River are being warned to drive care- fully since moose frequently come out to the road. The holiday week- end hunt for the Gowganda area was reported as 60 moose, 500 hunters. Deer: Generally good. Favourite areas: Manitoulin Island, the stretch between Parry Sound and Sudbury; the area adjoining Num- ber 11 highway west of Algonquin Park; Barry's Bay, Killaloo, Round Lake and south to just north of Lindsay and Peterborough, and Temagami. Geese: Nothing can compare, in the opinion of most experts, with the James Bay area. Ducks are also very plentiful here. The Can- ada geese have been coming down towards Moosonee and Moose Fac- tory earlier than usual this year. Goose patrols have been set up by the Department of Lands and For- ests and checking stations are now in operation. Hunters are asked to report at the stations in order that a record can be kept of the number and kind of geese killed. Ducks: Generally, fair to poor, but local hunters report good re- sults. Ruffed Grouse: Debatable. Some areas report the grouse were plen- tiful; others claim that few were seen. Driving over old lumber roads, singles with a few flocks are reported. Hunters are being asked to assist in the research programme of the Department by forwarding one wing and tail feathers of grouse to District Offices or local conserva- tion officers so sex and age ratios Haileybury High Beats Red Devils Haileybury High School, with a| solid weight advantage going for them along the line and backfield, pounded out a 19-12 victory over KLCVI Junior Red Devils at Teck Athletic Field last week. The Red Devils, fresh from their Monday 18-0 win over Chippewa Juniors in North Bay, found the going too rough against the Hail- eybury "school team"'. John Campbell skirted to. both Kirkland Lake touchdowns, both on long romps. He picked up the first one in the first quarter to give KLCVE the lead throughout that frame. Bob Brown cracked over from the eight yard line to even the count for Haileybury. It was a straight power run right through the middle of the line and came on a second long series of gains after an initial drive had: been stalled by a Haileybury backfield fumble. Haileybury's sharp-passing quar- terbacking Dave Black hit Real St. Cyr from the eight-yard line for the first point of the third quarter to. put the visitors ahead, 12-6. Campbell went wide around the left end and stepped over the goal- stripe for the second KLCVI major to, even the seore on their first series of plays after the Hailey- bury touchdown. Quarterback Black was sitting on the Kirkland 30-yard stripe wiken he picked up a Haileybury| fumble in his own backfield and seooted wide for the distance and the game-winning touchdown. The last point of the game came}, on a rouge kicked by Rod Doran. __ Sither team. St ama No convert attempts were og Thursday, October 20, 1960 to Reports ean be determined. Successful moose hunters are also asked to turn in the lower jaw of their moose. Purpose is to determine the age of the individual animal and to obtain some idea as to age structure of the wild pop- ulation in the forest. In the meantime deer hunters are getting ready for the hunt in Temagami where good results are forecast.
