This year a cheerful se- quence shows the family bringing home- the Chirstmas tree. This is no accident, the president, J. H. Litster, tells me. This is the way the TB Association would like to think-of families at Christmas time. What they have to think about however is that there is a good many fathers and mothers among the 9,000 patients in Can+ ada's 'sanitoria. The aim of the Tuberculosis As- sociation is to add to the ranks of families as gay as the one on the seals and to prevent tuberculosis which causes the disruption of so many homes. The cheerful fact for which we can be thankful is that we are making headway against tubercu- losis. If we do not fall for the temptation of stopping before we 'tare through we can banish it al- together. The dangerous fact is that we could so easily give up too soon. It is so satisfactory ito think that the death date is now only a tenth of what it-was 15 years ago that we dwell on that and turn away from the sad fact that the Sickness rate is not plunging downward. There are still between seven and eight thousand new cases a year and about half as many former patients who break down for a second time. All this though tuberculosis is preventable! What we must face is that every new case of tuber- culosis represents a failure in pre- vention. Some of the failures are due ito neglect, some to the ob- stinacy of those who refuse to take treatment, some to plain ignorance. The Tuberculosis Association wants this community to have a good prevention programme, a pro- gramme which embraces educa- tion, rehabilitation 'and 'all the ben- efits which accrue from knowing who is in special danger from this disease. This takes funds which they hope to get from the sale of Christmas Seals. It also takes co- operation in the programme, which they hope to get from all of. us. We hope they get both. In 1959 the Gross National Pro- duct of Canada amounted to $1,546 per capita, compared to a figure of $2,187 for the United States.
