Hailey ESTABLISHED 1904 urian-Cobalt Post -- Vol. 56 -- No. 38 : Haileybury, Ontario, Thursday, November 24, 1960 5c COPY ae Jury Finds Girl's Death Accidental Monique Talbot of Cobalt .died accidentally. That was- -the verdict reached Friday by -a coroner's jury. The inquest - was held at Haileybury with Dr. W.-C. Arnold and Crown - Attorney George Black presid- ing. we E Monique died in Haileybury _ hospital September 20. She was -rushed the day before after swallowing more than 50 pills sold as a cold cure by a Mont- real company. : The four-year-old girl had climbed on top of a cardboard box to reach the family's stock of medicines on a shelf. Her mother, Mrs. Palma_ Talbot, said that the family had just moved into their Earl Street home when the accident hap- pened. The little girl was upstairs at the time when she was dis- covered to have eaten the pills. It was believed that she had been consuming the pills for an 'hour or more before being discovered. Dr. H. A. Dunning of Cobalt said that he believed the child was doomed when it was first found she had taken the pills. The pills contained three dan- gerous drugs, any one of which might be fatal taken in large quantities. Dr. Dunning said that the child had vomited a number of times which normally might have got rid of the poison if it had occurred shortly after taking the pills. An autopsy re- vealed little trace of poison in the stomach, but large quan- tities in-the large and small bowels. He added that there are a humber of patent medicines than can be poisonous. One laxative contains strychnine, he said, and a _ two-year-old child died as the result of tak- 12 of the pills. The jury recommended that similar types of medicine should carry 'Poison' labels. Crown Attorney George Black said that the legal aspects of the case are being investigat- ed. (Editor's Note:) Warnings to parents concern- ing the dangers of medicines left where children can reach them are issued periodically by a variety of organizations. The annual mixed bonspiel, the opening 'spiel for the immediate district is being held at the week- end in New Liskeard. It is hoped that the Cobalt - Haileybury Club will send a large entry. Many Candidates In Haileybury Vote Despite a nomination meeting completely lacking in speeches, reports to the public, or anything except some genteel 'horse trading, Haileybury is all set for one of the biggest elections in its history. An Apology Councillor Joe Watson of Bucke Township has issued an apology to Harry Groom, who is the township's former as- sessor, and is now running for reeve. Mr. Watson stated at the Bucke Township nomina- tion meeting that during the re-assessment, the assessor discovered a building on Mr. - Groom's land which had never before been assessed. Mr. Watson states that he was in error. "I apologize to Mr. Groom. The assessor made the mistake because the build- ing had been moved from its former location to a new posi- tion, and there was no record of it on the new location." However, Mr. Watson said that he stood by his other statements that the re-assess- ment had discovered 224 acres of ground never before assess- ed, and the same number of lots. "And the records show that six of these lots are on Harry Groom's property," he added. A new system for handling Christmas mail has been adopted across Canada to speed up de- livery of greeting cards and at the same time kee) first class mail free of the rush. A special box has been installed early at the Haileybury Post Office to take the special load of. cards, and custo-= mers are being' urged to use it. The cards will be sent to North Bay where a special department has been set up for the handling of Christmas mail. All post offices between-Huntsville and Moosonee will feed the cards into North Bay. This will enable regular workers on peramnent staff to handle regular mail with a minimum of delay. Last year 10,000 pieces of Christmas mail passed through the Haileybury office. District TB Association To Sponsor Indian Doctor At a meeting held in the New Liskeard Hotel Tuesday evening, E. J. O'Brien, Executive Director |- of the Ontario Tuberculosis As- sociation addressed the members of the Temiskaming District As- sociation and stressed, the fact that in a changing and ever-shrinking world the tuberculosis problem is of increasing concern locally, pro- vineially, nationally and interna- tionally. Mr. O'Brien showed slides of a trip he had taken to Burma, Hong- kong, Thailand and India, pointing out the tremendous task being un- dertaken by the Anti-tuberculosis clinics in these countries. An ever-expanding population and the fact that -the antibiotics formerly relied upon to kill the germ are now becgming ineffect- ual to the extent that the tu- bercle bacillus is feeding on them has increased the<importance. of new research and treatment meth- ods. 2 An expanded program is plan- ned by the Temiskaming District Association and this includes the co-sponsorship of Dr. P. V. Ben- jamin, Tuberculosis Control Officer for India, to attend the Internation- al Union Against Tuberculosis Con- ference to be held in Toronto in |September of 1961. This is the first*time in the his- tory of the Union that a Conference has been held in Canada, and only the second time it-has been held on the North American continent, the first time being in Washington in 1932. Last year it was held in Istanbul, Turkey. The results of attendance at the mass survey held recently were issued and a 40% attendance show- ed-an increase of 10% over the survey' held in 1956. "Correction" Mr. Camsell and Mr. Budge- on wish to say that the news item regarding sale of property to St. Mary's Academy in Hail- eybury was not quoted in full. Neither gentlemen was oppos- ed to the sale of the property to the Academy, but they did object to it being seld at the assessed value. They have ob- jected for the last year to any properties being sold by the town at the assessed value.
