Maloney, today announced the appointment of Donald P. Doug- lass as Deputy Minister. Mr. Doug- lass was sworn into his new office today, although his appointment dates from December 29. He re- places H. C. Rickaby who retired last month as deputy minister af- ter 33 years in the public ser- vice, Mr. Douglass, a native of Stan- ley, N.B., who received his early education there and at the Roth- say N.B. Collegiate, graduated from the University of New Bruns- wick in- 1932 as-a Bachelor of Science, and in 1945 he <was awarded his M.Sc. "= His first years in the mining business, from 1935 to 1937 were spent with the Coniaurum gold mine in the Porcupine district _ where he was on the electrical engineering staff. In 1937 he join- ed the Department of Mines as the electrical inspector for the Kirkland Lake district. He moved to Toronto in 1940 to take over the position of senior electrical inspec- tor, and in 1952 he became exec- utive officer following the death of D. G. Siriclair. He was appointed assistant deputy minister in 1958. The new-deputy minister of mines is a member of the Pro- fessional Engineers' Association and of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. He is an enthusiastic curler and a member of the Toronto Curling Club. Un- til the ice becomes. too thick he spends much of his spare time as a fisherman.
