District 'K' is comprised of Le- gion branches from Temagami to Hornepayne. It is anticipated that delegates from all branches will attend the convention. The event embraces a parade of delegates, with their colors, to the Cenotaph to lay a wreath in mem- ory of departed Comrades. The parade will be held following the business sessions which should conclude between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., Sunday the 23rd. Englehart delegates who have at- tended similar meetings in other centres have invariablly been dis- mayed by the apparent absence of life in these communities at pa- rade time. This may have been due to the parades formerly being held during the noon hour and possibly unknown by the general public. It is felt that Englehart residents are averse to imparting an im- pression of inertia to visitors. To dispel any such indication, resi- dents are invited to view the pa- radé thereby demonstrating that while 'Englehart may not be .mas- sivé, neither is: it melancholic nor insignificant. The parade will form up at the Legion Hall and proceed via Fourth Ave., directly to the Ceno- tarp Returning, the parade will advance on Second St. to Seventh Ave.; Seventh Ave. to Fourth St.; Fourth St. to Fourth Ave. and Fourth Ave. to the Legion Hall. It has been suggested that those who procured flags and accessor- ies;at the time of the Semi-Centen- niall may wish to display them on thig occasion. Such a gesture would be regarded with much gratifica- tion by the Legion. District 'K' is comprised of Le- gion Branches from Temagami to Hebrst, Hornepayne and Moose actory. The Haileyburian Thursday, April 20, 1961 anned for Englehart Committee meetings Saturday the 22nd, will be held in the Engle- hart Town Hall as follows: 1:00 p.m.--District Council Meet. 3:00 p.m.--Service Officers' S. 5:00 p.m.--District Membership M. 7:00 p.m.--District Sports Meeting The General Business Meeting Sunday the 23rd, will be held in the Englehart Legion Hall, com- mencing at 10:00 a.m. This meet- ing will include elections of Dis- trict Commander, Deputy District Commander and District Sports Officer, offices now held by Bert Moore of Kapuskasing, Bob Mc- Chesney and Vic Finkleman of Kirkland Lake, respectively. The general business session will be followed by a parade of delegates to the Cenotaph and activities will conclude with the District Ban- quet in the Legion Hall. About 50 graduate and under- graduate students in the geological sciences, mostly from Ontario uni- versities, will be employed as as- sistants on the survey parties. The field season generally extends from mid-May to mid-September. Staff geologists of the Department and other fully qualified special- ists are leaders of the parties. Expert Says Septic Tanks Need Proper Care "Some of the ideas about septic tanks cost farm families consid- erable money -each year," says Prof. Ross Irwin of the Depart- ment of Engineering Science, O.A.C. For instance, he knocks down the theory that the liquid coming from a septic tank is pure. He says the effluent from a septic tank "will be considerably more contaminated'? than the material going in. For that reason, never discharge the runoff from a septic tank into a stream,-ditch, or un- derground water table. "The best place for a septic tank discharge is into the top lay- ers of soil where the bacteria will less: That's why tile lines of the septic bed should be laid fairly shallow -- about two feet deep. It is: much better than using seepage pits for absorption." The engineer also 'should be measured.
