PAPERS FREETOWN The 2,000,000 citizens of diamond-rich Sierra Le- one recently celebrated the in- Gependence of their colony after nearly 175 years as a British col- any. Independence came to the' west African territory -- created as a hayen for freed slayes at the be- ginning of the last century -- in @ dramatic midnight ceremony. The colony was a haven for Worth American slaves who had fled to the Canadian Maritime pro- vinces during the American War ef Independence. Some 15,000 persons jammed Freetown Sports Stadium and stood together to sing the hymn "Lead Kindly Light," followed by the new SARS" Sierra Leone national anthem. FITCHBURG -- Bob Cousy, Boston Celtics basketball star, took a golf lesson last week. He went out that afternoon in a foursome which included his instructor, Oak Hill County pro Tom Lamey. Cousy shot a hole in one on the 150 yard fifth hole. CHINA BAR -- Motorists nego- tiating the Trans-Canada Highway will soon be spared a spectacular and unwelcome view of the turbu- lent Fraser River -- 700 feet straight down. A 2,000 - foot tunnel, to be open- ed here soon, will banish the mem- ory of the old, narrow road that clings to the cliffside as it inches its way around the China Bar rock bluff. "Tt was the worst stretch on the highway," said Bill Amm of the Emil Anderson construction com- pany. In the two years required to build the two-lane' tunnel, crews drilled 1,400 feet from the north and 700 feet from the south. ST. THOMAS -- The fish got away, but John Thwaites had fish- erman's luck. After several hours of helping haul a seine net at nearby Port Stanley, he came home here with enly a pailful of smelt and, as he found, without his wallet. At dawn, he hustled back to the shore. In the smothered remains of the party's beach bonfire, he found his wallet, charred but with his $95 intact. LINDSAY -- Magistrate R. I. Moore returned here from a Flo- rida vacation and told how he was offered $50 a day to join the coun- ter - revolutionaries in Cuba. "Anybody sitting on a bench was approached,' he said. "All that mattered was that you looked fit." There was a catch to the offer, however. When he asked when he would be paid he was told: "When it is all over." Magistrate Moore said a wave of rumors. swept Florida at the time of the Cuban invasion. Many people were sure the Russians were about to bomb Florida, par- ticularly Cape Canaveral. BOSTON--Eddie Shore is going to get car licence plates reading "Mr.. Hockey." Governor John Volpe signed in- to law a bill to have the registry of motor vehicles issue the special plates to Shore, former Boston Bruins defenceman and a member of hockey's Hall of Fame. Shore owns Springfield Indians of the American Hockey League. LONDON -- Golf experts here are debating the case of a fly that putted a birdie three. The question: Did the ball fall or was it pushed? The incident happened at Sun- ningdale, Berkshire, in a match between Michael Lunt and Hugh Squirrell. Squirreil was on _ the third green in two. The ball rolled forward and dropped into the hole. Lunt marked a three for Squir- rell on his card. At the clubhouse, they were toid it shouldn't have counted--if the fly moved the ball. The rule says: "If a ball at rest be moved or the lie altered by any outside agency except wind, it shall be placed on the spot from where it was moved." A putting fly thus would be- come an '"'outside agency." At St. Andrews, club secretary Brigadier E. Brickman, said: 'There is a similar case. It dealt with a bee." The bee landed on a bail on the lip of a hole. It was decided the bee was an "outside agency." Can a fly weighing about 18 mil- ligrams putt a ball weighing 46,- 000 milligrams? Said an entomologist: "It would depend on the way the blades of grass were lying. A million-to-one chance." NEW YORK -- Jack Demarco was delighted when he got word from the hospital that he was the father of a daughter. Demarco dashed fer the hospi- tal--to learn that he was, instead, the father of twin girls. He was rejoicing over this ex- tra good fortune when the doctor came around a few minutes later, offered congratulations and start- ed to relate what had happened. "I know. Twins."' "Yes, twins," "Plus one." A third girl had been born a few minutes after the second. Demarco and his wife, Frances, also have a son, Michael, 4. said the doctor. WARSAW -- There's no disres- pect intended when crew mem- bers of the Polish ship Kalisz re- fer to their navigation officer as the "second lady." The description is apt for the simple reason that the navigator is a woman, Danuta Walas - Ko- blynska, the only female naviga- tion officer plying the seven seas for Poland's merchant fieet. Her present post on the Kalisz is the result of a long struggle to break down the barriers of anti- female prejudice constructed by old Polish salts. While still in school, Danuta took a part-time job as a deck assistant on a river tug and later got a job as a "'deck boy." But she had to win a battle for admission to the government's na- vigation school at Gdynia. After two rejections, she finally was ac- cepted. Even after taking a diploma there, Danuta had another battie on her hands before she actually got to navigating. "Navigation is no job for a wo- man,"' authorities said, and offer- Printed ta: BOSTON, LOS ANGELS LONDON | THE CHRISTIAN "SCIENCE MONITOR AN INTERNATIONAL DAILY NEWSPAPER Interesting Accurate Complete International News Coverage The Christian Science Monitor Qne Norway St., Boston 15, Mass, Send your newspaper for the time checked.
