Northern Lights Welcome Visifors Visitors from Cobalt Lodge were welcomed by the Noble Grand, Mrs. Buia Lathem, when Northern Lights Rebekah Lodge held their meeting on May 3. j The visiting committee reported very little sickness among the members, with only one card sent "land one hospital visit made. An invitation was received from the Englehart Lodge to attend a social evening there on Thursday, May 18. A donation of a new piano stool was made to the lodge. An impressive service was held to dedicate the altar cloth, pillow and Bible marker, given by Mrs. Florence Berry in memory of her mother, Mrs. Miriam Bonin. This was followed by a re-consecration service. Mrs. A. J. Brown thanked the members who took part in the service. Red Shield Appeal Conducted in May Robert McGill, chairman of the Salvation Army's. annual Red Shield Appeal, which is being con- ducted during the month of May, feels that there is every evidence of a successful campaign. It is hoped that the response will be generous as 20 per cent of all receipts will be retained for welfare work in the town and area. It is a well-known fact that the Salvation Army workers care for the body as well as uplifting the spirit with a message of healing and. hope. Share in their work of mercy. C. La- pointe officiating. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Scalzo of Haileybury and the groom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. H. Clarke of Waterloo. The wedding music was played by Sister Ste. Auguste and the solo- ist was Miss Dayntrie MacDougal. Given in marriage by her father, the bride chose for her wedding a gown of white lace, the street- length skirt formed of three full tiers. The bodice featured a ba- teau neckline and MHily point sleeves. Her shoulder-length veil formed a coronet headdress held by a rhinestone tiara. She carried a white prayer book, decorated with a rose and lhily-of-the-valley. She was attended by Miss Geor- gette Sauve as maid of honor and Misses Margaret and Priscilla Cavanagh as bridesmaids. They were_gowned alike in French blue peau de soie, fashioned with tear- |; drop skirts, scoop necklines and bracelet-length sleeves. sashes were tied in large bows at the back. They wore butterfly hats to match their gowns and car- ried baskets of white and blue "mums. The best man was Ronald Date, the ushers were Ronald Riley and Steven Scalzo. For her daughter's wedding and the reception which followed at the Hotel Haileybury, Mrs. Scalzo wore a blue. organza sheath with white hat and accessories. The groom's mother chose a_ lilac printed sheath with matching or- ganza duster. Both ladies wore corsages of red rose buds. Later, the young couple left for a wedding trip to southern points and on their return will make their home in Gowganda. For travelling the bride wore a two- piece suit of pale biue wool, trim- med with grey mink with white accessories. Among the guests from out-of- town, who attended the wedding were the bride's grandfather, Mr. S. Scalzo of Waterloo, Mr. and Mrs. H. Caughill, Mr. and Mrs. B. Sealzo, Mrs. Grace Cline, Mrs. A. McKelvie, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Nis- kanen and family, Mr. and Mrs. Herb Clarke, all of Waterloo; Mr. M. Walker, Timmins; Mr. and Mrs. A. Poppleton, Spanish; Mr. and Mrs. Shartner, Gowganda, Mrs. Graham and daughter Muriel of Toronto. John E. Johnston Funeral services were held from the Buffam Funerai Chapel for John E. Johnston, a pioneer resi- dent of Cobalt, who passed away recently at his home on the Nipis- sing property. Born on Anticosti Island, Mr. Johnston was in his eightieth year. He came to Cobalt fifty years ago and was employed as mine super- intendent at the Nipissing Mine for forty years. His wife, the former Evelyn Bates, predeceased him in - 1939, also a daughter, Mrs. Russell Le- mon, in 1929.
