During the past few weeks, the hewly purchased retail branch on the: District Town's waterfront has been undergoing extensive renova- tions, and members of the firm are throwing open the building for the inspection of their customers and the general public. The large roomy showroom has been sheeted with the newest of wood pannelling, the design and intent of the company was car- ried out by Haileybury contrac- tor, Ben Bourget. The new retail branch is in eharge of John England, who has been associated with ali phases of the builder's supply business for many years. He is well-known by district contractors. The firm of Wm. Pollock and Son Limited has a long history in the District of Temiskaming. The original woods operation and lum- ber mill was established when the town of Englehart was-a tiny, northern settlement. The present firm was incorpor- ated in 1924-by the late William Pollock and John Poliock. It is still a family business, with Clayton Pollock as president, Ralph and Bruce Pollock as vice-presi- dents, Miss Eulah Pollock, secre- tary-treasurer and Mrs. John Pol- Jock, a director. Start Work on Home for Blind The new CNIB center at Sud- bury will be finished by next year, and construction will start with- in the next few days. The center, which will cost some $500,000 is specially designed to house 42 blind persons, and will play a key part in rehabilitation and retrain- ing of newly blinded. Everything in the center is de- signed to facilitate living condi- tions for the blind. Sharp corfers every room can be easily identi- fied by a raised pattern on doors and door handles. The building will be located at the intersection of Prete and York streets, and the contract has been awarded to the Frid Construction Company. Many organizations and muni- cipalities in the area are contribut- ing to the cost of the building. New Liskeard has promised $650 spread across three years, and Cobalt has donated $450 spread across three years. Many local Lions Clubs}, have also made donations. Marking the extension of com- pany activities, the firm: has ex-| tended an invitation to residents:|. of the Tri-Town area to visit the new Haileybury showroom to- morrow, Friday, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. There will be refreshments for| the visitors, and valuable . prizes for a number of lucky persons. A Guard of Honour was formed to receive and 'welcome District Deputy President Mrs. F. Ortwein of Englehart, and Mrs. E. Hyckie, Warden of the Rebekah Assembly of Ontario. Also welcomed to their meeting were members from the Northern Beacon Lodge of Englehart, and the Nippissing Lodge of North Bay. The visiting committee reported two members ill. Sister Brown thanked the Lodge and- members for the cards and fiowers: recéiv- ed by Mr. Brown ae his ill ness. A report was given concerning the chartering of a bus for the School of Instruction which will be held in Englehart: sometime in May. Mrs. Ortwein addressed the Lodge and spoke of "The Pillars of the Rebekah Order'. Mrs. Hyckie also gave an inter- esting report on International Re- bekahs and Oddfellows. Repre- sentatives of the visiting lodges thanked the Cobalt ladies for their kind invitation to meet with them on this occasion. Mrs. H. Armstrong presented her daughter, Mrs. G. Easy, with her 15 year Jewel. Mrs. Greening and her com- mittee. | previous, Thursday, May 18, 1961 The Haileyburian Page 5& Festival Musicians Entertain A&S Group COBALT -- Miss Bonnie Mallett, one of the Public School pupils who took part in the evening's pro- gram, played for the *singing of O Canada which opened the reg- ular meeting of the Cobalt-Cole- man Home and School Association. Room count was tallied by Sec- retary Mrs. V. Foliick, with a to- tal of 28 points awarding the Ban- ner to Miss L. Anyon's class. The attendance draw which has been carried ever for several months was won by Mrs. F. Tryon. President Mrs. Koza passed on several reminders, one for par- ents of Kindergarten age children re-registration, and another con- cerning the annual Tea, which will be held on Friday, May 19, in the Community Hall. Room mothers will be phoning for baking for the tea tables and produce. Mrs. Wallman, tea convener, asked if the pupils candy sale which has usuaily been held on the same afternoon couldn't be held either the Friday before or following the tea, making it eas- ier for the mothers. Other years the May meeting has been in the form of a social evening and as these have been very poorly attended, a motion was made that this be discontin- ued, and just carry on with the regular meeting. : Mrs. Koza announced the date }Atlan McGugan, 'by Mr. of the Home and School Work- shop, to be held in Englehart on May 3rd, and hoped that some of the members would be able to attend. Guests for the meeting were pu- pils who are taking part in the Musie Festival and as Mr. Mc- Gugan worded it, an excellent op- portunity to get rid of a few of the pre performance butterflies. Solos were sung by Don Mathers, Jean Spack, Jane Koza, Sandra McGugan,-Brenda Frackleton, Su- san White, Judy Reise, Cheryi Mc- Lean and Heather Marcotte. Miss Evelyn Hurst, the Music Teacher, Played the accompaniment for them. Piane. Soles were played by Bonnie Buffam, Patricia White, Cheryl McLean, Barbara and Sandra McGugan, and Bonnie Mallett. Piano. Duets were played by Pat- ricia White and Allan McGugan, Barbara and Sandra McGugan, and Bonnie Mallett and Linda Conti. The sehool chorus concluded this very enjoyable musical concert with their entry numbers 'Sweet and Low', in two part harmony, and 'Somewhere a Child is Sing- ing' in three part harmony.
