T [ See by THE PAPERS CHESTERTOWN, Md -- Marilyn fhe patient mallard is back again, attempting to hatch eggs at the Remington Farms wildlife research centre--this time from a nest 14 feet up in a big oak tree. .The wacky duck, whose nesting habits baffle biologists, is guard- ing 12 eggs. Farm personnel say the pros- pects look good for Marilyn to succeed this time after three pre- vious efforts failed. If so, the question then is what will happen next. Belong in trees, and the young are 6upposed'to learn to swim before they fly. {Three years ago Marilyn built a nest on the lawn of tthe main build- fing at the research farm. A pre- Gator quickly shattered the nest and a dozen eggs. Last spring, the duck tried twice Mallards don't} ' again in the same oak tree, but something destroyed her 14 eggs within two weeks. A little later, she moved 12 feet up into the tree --but again a predator, possibly a racoon, destroyed the eggs. This year she nested two feet above the tree level of her last attempt. Another mystery: Why doesn't Marilyn fly north to the Canadian Prairies each spring with her col- leagues. WINSTON--SALEM, N.C. -- Ray Rolins, a Wake Forest senior, re- ports his "car smash'? was just that -- a smashing success, He turned down a junkman's of- fer of $10 for his 1947 automobile and instead let students take whacks at the old car with a Sledgehammer at 25 cents a stroke. Rollins said the "car smash . . gave the fellows a chance to let off exam tension". And besides, he made $18 on the old jalopy: TORONTO -- For a long time no one could dispute that J. B. Zzylch was just the end--in the Toronto telephone book anyway. But that was before Zylman Zzys came along. Zzylch, otherwise known as the University of Toronto chapter of the Phi Delta Epsilon fraternity, had, understandably enough, last place listing in the Toronto phone directory from at least the 1940's until 1959. Then Zzys cropped up. Mr. Zzys -- vulgarly known as David Anderson--relegated Zzylch to second-last place in the 1960 dir- ectory. And the scent of Zzylch's blood was enough for third-year U of T student Alan Walker. Walker, whose previous expedi- tions into the limelight included sitting as a pseudo-Communist in U of T's "model parliament' and renting the services of a young lady "'beatnick"' to parties thrown by Toronto's bourgeoisie, decided to cop last place in the 1961 dir- ectory. And, sure enough, Mr. Zzys found himself in the penultimate position this year, with one Mere- dydd Zzzyghaff bringing up the rear. Walker -- alias Zzzyghaff -- isn't resting on his laurels. First place in the phone book may be harder to get -- the A-AA dental labora- tory is hard to beat -- but Walker plans to sé€k incorporation for the Aaabahedian Turkish Rug Comp- any. Aaand Aaafter Aaall Aaanything can happen. OTTAWA -- District farmer Hay- don Cobourn said he has found a wallet that he lost 214 years ago on his farm. Still intact $260. Mr. Cobourn said some of the bills were a little damaged, but he hoped to get them replaced by the Bank of Canada. TORONTO -- The Royal York Hotel strike here has re-united a father and son after a separation of 30 years. Otto Kehnel, 61, a valet at the Royal York, left Germany in 1930, in the wallet was headed for Western Canada. He lost track of his son Wilhelm, who was in the German air force and later was a prisoner of war in the United States. Wilhelm came to Toronto seven years ago but could not trace his father until he saw a picture of picketers at the hotel. Among them was Otto Kehnel, a Royal York employee for 11 years, "We both got a terrific shock", said Mr. Kehnel senior. VANCOUVER -- Possibly the world's most unusual summer school will be held at sea Ae ing June 19. The classroom will be the 21,000- ton liner Monterey of the Matson Line. A University of British Colum- bia professor, Meredith Thompson, will be one of the instructors. The ship will cruise the South Pacific, stopping at Tahiti, the Cook Islands, Auckland, Sydney, Fiji, Samoa and Hawaii. Eight. courses, all fully accredit- ed, will be completed in 23 days of classes. BELLEVILLE, Mich. -- Barney Lee, 39, became enraged when he discovered someone had broken the windows of his car at a park, pol- ice said, and: 1. Fired a 16-guage shot gun in- to the air twice, panicking pick- nickers and bathers. 2. Then drove his car into five other autos in the parking area, causing $1,500 worth of damage. Green Thumb Tips Make this a habit: place rakes against a wall with the prongs facing inward when you have fin- ished using them. It could save an eye or a banged head. Haileybury, Ont. P. O.
