At a special council meeting Monday night, Mayor Fulton Purdy said that the town had spent a good deal of money sweeping the streets _ this spring, but now they are just as untidy. Town clerk Bob Bond was told to get prices on garbage cans, and the council has hopes that some organization might underwrite the cost. Then, before getting an Operator's. or Chauffeur's licence, they will be required. to pass a New Liskeard Hydro Employees Honored at Safety Banquet Some 75 members. of Ontario Hydro's New Liskeard staff were honored at an official dinner Tues- day night in recognition of an ac- cident-free safety record which now nears the seven year mark. Now that all examinations are carried out by Civil Service Ex- aminers, it is possible to insti- tute this new method of pre-test- ing applicants: before giving them an Instruction: Permit. This had 'not been possible under the form- er system of 'fee examiners', he said, because of the difficulties in- volved in conducting tests, and the requirement of. special instru- ments. 'It was said that the new sys- tem of driver examination, insti- tuted as-an-asset to safety, was 'more- costly to operate. Because of this added cost of operation it had~ been found necessary to re- vise the 'scale of fees for Instruc- tion' Permits and Examinations. He said that after May 31st the fee for an Instruction: Permit, in-= cluding the pre-test, would. be raised' from $1.00 to $2.00. At the same time the fee for the first ex- amination for an Operator's or Chauffeur's licence would be in- creased from $1.00 to $3.00. Where a person failed the first examina- tion subsequent examination with- in six months would be $2.00. There would be no increase in the $1.00 fee charged 80-year-old driv- ers who are examined annually. He concluded that it was felt these increases were small in com- parison to the additional safety measures provided by the Provin- ce's new Driver Examination Pro- gram. North Cobalt Mrs. L. S.
