Page 4 Spiritual Alertness Needed for Today _ Greater spiritual alertness needed to meet the Pe ance challenges and opportunities pre- sented by the tremendous upheaval in the world today, The Christian Science Board of Directors said. In a special message to the An- nual Meeting of the Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scien- tist, held in Boston, Mass., on June 5, the Directors called for renewed vigilance on the part of all who cherish freedom, brotherhood and Truth. "Among the stirring headlines of our day," they said, "there is no more vital news than the Christi- anity which our 'Master taught and practiced. In an age. of political tyranny and ecclesiastical despot- ism, of turbulence, unrest and hatred, Christ Jesus came preach- -ing that the kingdom of God is at hand. He wielded a power which the might of materialism could neither parallel nor résist." In our own age, material limita- tions are yielding to the freedom- giving power of God, infinite Spirit, the Directors maintained. "Humanity is crying out," they said, 'for freedom. Peoples are clamoring for liberty; nations are being born; the barriers of time and space are crumbling ... In the fields of religion, government, education, discovery, invention, in- dustry, and medicine, matter is slowly yielding to Spirit." Named President of The Mother Church was Mrs. Mary Lee Gough Nay, a Christian Science teacher and practitioner of Boston, Mass. She succeeds Arthur W. Eckman, General Counsel of The Mother Church. A native of Texas, Mrs. Nay re- ceived -her education at Ward Seminary, Nashville, Tennessee, the University of Texas, and the University of Chicago. She with- drew from a-.musical career in 1918 to devote her entire time to the practice of Christian Science healing in Chicago. She became an authorized teacher of. Christian Science in 1946. She will serve as President for one year. In her keynote address, Mrs. Nay said that release from the frustrations and inequalities of ma- teriality can come to all through spiritual awakening. "Basically, mankind needs awakening from the nightmare of belief in living matter and intelli- gent evil, from its confidence that |iiton. Emphasizing that there is an answer to hatred, disease, poverty, and disaster, Mr. Eckman, the retiring President, said, "it is God's law of love, which must be invoked in humility and with abid- ing faith and clear understanding."' This Jamboree is term- ed a Jamboree of participation, because each and every scout will have the opportunity to use his scouting skills in competition with other scouts. The camp will hold 92 complete troops plus the staff members. Of these, four troops will be from the Boy Scouts of America, our brothers to the south. In all 3,168 scouts will converge on Ottawa for the ten days in a glorious week of scouting and for them an event to be of life-long remembrance. There will be four sub camps named af- ter explorers in Canadian history -- Cartier, Champlain, Thompson, Mackenzie -- each being=a com- plete unit with 23 troops, a sub camp chief and his assistant, scouters, first aid, sanitation and hygiene department, and will hold their own council fires and activ- ities. Troops will be numbered consecutively using provincial ab- breviations as a prefix: eg. ONT. 1. Jamboree scouts will be identi- fied by the official Jamboree neck- erchief which is red, having the crest of the Jamboree on the point. Two of these neckerchiefs will be issued to each scout attending. Qualifications of such an event are that the boy be 14 years of age, a first class scout and select- ed by his application bythe dis- trict Jamboree committee. Quotas are given each district in each province to be filled, thus limiting the number who can attend. Temiskaming district has a quota of five scouts to fill, of which three places have been taken. Three ap- plications from the 3rd New Lis- keard troop were completed in January and were accepted by Provincial headquarters. Final plans are' being completed now as to transportation and equip- ment and uniform for these scouts. 'Each scout is required to complete medicals within 14 days of their departure for the Jamboree. Two complete uniforms are necessary, one for camp use, the other for use in ceremony, chureh, parades and on tour in Ottawa. Representing scouting in New Liskeard and their own troop will be T/L John Birnie, P/L Ken Da- vidson and P/L_ Dan.
