Junior Golf Boom Forces Ratio Change By GEORGE LAUGHLIN Increased popularity of the On- tario Junior Golf Championships each year and the resulting up- Swing in entries has forced officials to periodically alter the qualifying ratio. Two of the three champions and winners of The Telegram Trophies last year will be back to defend the honors, or seek top spot in a high- er bracket. Junior Golf has three divisions: Junior for players 16, 17 and 18 years of age; Juvenile, 14 and 15 years and Bantam, for boys 13 years of age and under. Peter Knechtel of Kitchener won the 1960 juvenile honors and Randy Dunk of St. Catharines took the bantam crown, and they will both be competing in district qualifying play on July 7. The finals for On- tario titlés are booked at St. Cath- arines Golf Club on July 14. Bob Panasiuk of Windsor's Rose- land Club, winner of the 1960 jun- jor honors has since turned profes- sional and naturally will not be eligible. This leaves the junior division open to several strong contenders who have been impressive' in the province's amateur tournaments throughout the past two years. Last year a record 869 players competed in qualifying rounds and 85 of these reached the finals at Islington Club. : Qualifying rounds began on July 8rd at the Sarnia Golf Club and the Haileybury Golf Club and con- tinue on the 6th und 7th at the fol- lowing locations: Bay of Quinte Golf Club, Dundas Valley Golf Club, Rockway Golf Club and the Westmount Golf Club in Kitchener, Highland Golf Club 'and the Lon- don Hunt Club in London, Owen Sound Golf Club, Peterborough Golf Club, Smiths Falls Golf Club, the Lookout Point Golf Club in Welland, the Beach Grove Golf Club. in Windsor and in Toronto, the Summit, Whitevale and For- est Hills Golf Clubs. Because OGA officials expect the number to be considerably sur- passed this year it has been neces- sary to set the junior and juvenile divisions qualifying ratio at one in every nine players. The bantam division has been set at one in every ten players. After paying the $2.00 qualifying round entry fee, any boy within the age limits is eligible to com pete, whether he belongs to a golf club or not. Entries are Sent to the Secretary of each District Qualify- ing Club with the exception of Toronto District where they are sent to the Ontario Golf Associa- tion, 170 Bay St., Toronto. Jim Mackey opened the last half with a single, but Price forced the next three batters to pop out for a well deserved win. The game was marred somewhat, and could turn into a real grudge series be< tween these two teams as coach Don Shepherdson and Gord Love hurled insults at one another. Ume pire Pat Scott also caught his sharé from both sides. The New Liskeard Juveniles sorely miss their ace pitcher Bill Glashan, but with such star players as Bob Steele, Denny Conlin, Bob Farrow and Barry Knight still in the line up should be a top contender once again im the Juvenile series. ; Reg.
