The announce- ment was made today by Honour- able James A. Maloney, Ontario's Minister of Mines. Second-place winner was the team representing Geco Mines, and the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines placed third. Other finalists represented Bicroft Uranium Mines, Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Macassa Gold Mines and Dicken- son Mines. These were the win- ners of the seven district compe- titions held earlier. Altogether, 44 teams throughout the province took part in the com- petition, although the five teams in the Cobalt inspection district were not eligible to compete in the provincial final because these teams use a different type of breathing apparatus. In the competition, identical problems are set for all the teams who must meet them in similar simulated emergency conditions. The judges in the final competi- tion were R. L. Smith, the Assist- ant Chief Engineer of Mines; G. G. McPhail, the Inspector of Mine Rescue Training; and R. E. Mur- ray, the District Inspector station- ed at Kenora. The Mine Safety Appliances Trophy will be presented to the Nordic team in the near future. Pall-bearers were Jack Hal- worth, Hugh Armstrong, Leighton Maltby, Henry Adams, Jim Camp- bell and Jack Belbeck. Surviving are his wife Lillian and sister May Storie, one son Garnet of Haileybury, (Eleanor) Mrs. James Sheldon, Larder' Lake, (Bess) Mrs. Ovila Leveille of Hail- eybury, (Lois) Mrs. Ted Brown, North Cobalt, also nine grandchild- ren. Mr. Ross will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Your Red Cross reminds fisher- men that it's cheaper to lose that lure snagged on the bottom than lose your life trying to retrieve it and ignoring water safety rules. Never leave a swimming or wad- ing area unsupervised when there are young children around. Drown- ings can occur swiftly and in very shallow water.
