i AY Julius Neilson and Ernie Marchese examine tie rich gold ore taken from' their claims in Bryce Township. The partners are negotiating the sale of the property to~potential mine makers, Rich Vein Uncovered In Bryce Week-end Prospectors Find Gold Two self-confessed week-end pros- wectors based in Haileybury and New Liskeard have uncovered im- portant gold showings in Bryce Township, and are walking around feeling slightly like the person who found a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. _ Julius Neilson who works full time for the Ontario Department of Reform in Haileybury and Ernie Marchese who runs a salvage busi- ness out of New Liskeard have been spending their week-ends prospecting in Bryce and Tudhope Townships for the past three years. To the west of the present gold claims the partners have staked 16 claims which have a rich cop- per showing, with traces of gold; but it wasn't until a few weeks ago that they sent away samples for assay taken from the open cut in the Bryce area in which they have 20 claims. In the summer work they have drilled and blasted 200 feet of a quartz veins, and have traced the Same rich showing for several miles. Channel samples from the cut assayed at $75.25 a ton and has a 10.40 percent assay of copper as well. Grab samples assayed un- believably high. The claims~are easily accessable from the Hills Lake Road, and are not far from the Briscoe property where -a mill was placed: in opera- tion 'during the summer. Interest' in' Bryce Township, and claims registered by the partners are not new. Julius Neilson, who has been prospecting all over the Haileybury WI October Meeting Nine members and one visitor answered the roll call at the Oc- tober meeting of the Haileybury Women's Institute in, the Legion "Hall on Thursday evening. The president, Mrs. E. B. Campbell, was in the chair. The roll call was '"'Name a liv- ing pioneer of Haileybury", and when it was answered it was found that three of their own mem- bers were in that category. Mrs. Robert Campbell, who came north in 1896; Mrs. H. Burton, in 1910; and Mrs. R. MacGillivray, who ar- rived many years ago. Following a discussion it was decided to transfer the building fund into the general fund, as it was not considered feasible to erect a hall at the present time. Other business included the deci- sion to make a small payment for the tea served during the so-. cial hour and each member was asked to donate one dollar in order to augment the current funds. The Noveinber meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. H. Bur- ton, with each member bringing a visitor. Mrs. S. McIntyre will give a baking demonstration. district for the past 35 years said that a Fred Estervelt took .tubfulls of highgrade ore from the same spot 30 years ago. "We have had high assays from his dump," said Mr. Neilson, "and I suspect that he was interested only in the gold he could see."' The propectors received some help from their sons in doing. the necessary work on the claims, Carl Neilson and Don Marchese have been particularly helpful, accord- ing to their parents. Now that the partners have found their gold mine, the next thing they are interested in is finding someone interested in buying the claims and starting a mine. J man, said Mr. Thursday, October 19, 1961 Ontario Hydro Engineer Heads Ghana Project An Ontario Hydro engineer will direct Ghana's massive Volta Riv- er power project. Frank J. Dobson, 44, construc- tion manager of Hydro's $250 million Lakeview thermal-electric development, on the western edge of Metropolitan Toronto, has been named chief executive of the new Volta River. Power Authority by Ghana president Kwame Nkrumah. Mr. Dobson and his family leave for Accra early next month. He will be on loan from Hydro un- '\til the project is finished, prob- ably in four or five years. W. Ross Strike; Hydro . Chair- Dobson "is one ef Hydro's outstanding. construc- tion engineers". He said President _}Nkrumeh had asked Prime Min- ister Diefenbaker for a Canadian to head the Volta Authority. The request was passed on to Prem- ier Frost and then to Mr. Strike, who asked Mr. Dobson if he was interested in the job. "Ontario Hydro believes that de- velopment projects of this nature deserve the fullest support by Can- adians. We are pleased that Mr. Dobson, in common with other Hydro employees who have made similar contributions in the past, has seen fit to accept this re- sponsibility," Mr. Strike said. Essentially the Volta River pow- er scheme involves building a big (2,100eet-long, .375-feet-high) rock dam, a complemeéntary sad- dle dam nearby, and a- power- house with four 128,000-kilowatt generators at Akosombo, 68 miles northeast of Acera, the capital. The powerhouse will. be designed for an ultimate capacity of 768,000 kilowatts.. Ghana's present electri- cal output is about 100,000 kilo- watts from diesel-electric gener- ators. Major consumer of the plant's power will be an aluminum smel- ter to be built at Tema, Ghana's seaport, close to Acera. The plant will also supply industrial and residential -power needs in south- ern Ghana. Cost "of the: Akosombo scheme is nearly $170 million. This in- cludes dams and powerhouses, generating equipment, a village and hospital for construction work- ers, and transmission systems. Ghana is providing half the funds. The rest is being hegoti- ated but is expeeted to come from the World Bank, the United States and the United Kingdom. An IHtalian consortium several months ago won a $44 million con- tract for~ constructing the two dams and the powerhouse. Engineers from the Kaiser or- ganization in. the United States have - completed preliminary sur- veys at the site, design work, and contraet specifications. .They will oversee work in the field and re- port to Mr. Dobson. The Haileyburian Page oy When the Akosombo dam backs up waters of the swiftly flowing :, Volta River, it will create a 3,500 square mile lake which will diss, place 65,000 persons. f As .well as directing construes!! tion, Mr. Dobson will be. respons+! ible for the retocation. program before the lake is created. As... chief executive of the Volta Auth- | ority, he will be in charge of fin- | anees, and will cope with down- | stream effects when the Volta is ( dammed and a host of other de- ~ tails.
