os ~ Meross the Kitchen Table BY MRS..-MAC What a flood of -memories short a item in a newspaper can 'bring to mind! Last Friday morn- ing, «when glancing through 'the Bracebridge Herald-Gazette, one of the weeklies received: in this of- fice, I noticed in their 'twenty years ago". column,. the announce- ment of the death of Rev. William Farmer, at the age of 81. He was in change of .the Englehart and Tomstown Presbyterian churches 4n 1918, and -in August of that year was the minister who. mar- ried my husband and I. In those days there were no cars or paved roads and Mr. Farmer drove from j Englehart to our home, a distance of nine miles, with a horse and buggy. There was one part-of the road that was extremely bad, and coming through a deep mudhole, . poth traces, (to the uninitiated they ~ broke. wére the leather straps that at- tached the horse to the buggy), Fortunately, it happened right in front -of-a-farmhome, and although there was no one at home (tHey were all down at our place; waiting for the wedding ceremony to start), he went in and hunted around the stable until he found several pieces of haywire to do a repair job. Despite the delay, he was only a Httle over half an hour Yate. But I can tell you, it seem- ed like two hours to me! Mr. Farmer was born in Jed- burgh, Scotland, coming to Can- ada in 1907. He was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1915, and was superannuated in 1928, making his home afterwards in Bracebridge. Have you ever tried to get a recipe from one of those good old fashioned cooks who never follow a "'receet" but just go by guess and by gorrah, and never have a failure in anything they ever bake? Well, I have, and this little item cut from the Christian Science Svlyn Shoppe NOVEMBER PLUMS SPECIAL -- Thursday, and Saturday: Pre - Christmas clearance of broken lines and sizes in sweaters, Grandmere, Jantzen, Lansea and others. Monitor, I think from John Gould's "Down on the Farm" column, is surely true to life. "T think it was six cups of flour I used--pbut I don't use a measur- ing cup. I just take a tea-cup out of: the cupboard and dip.-No, I don't sift it. Then I kind of guess how many cups I've used, and put in two teaspoons of baking powder for each cup. Somewhere near. That would be, two-times-six -- 12 teaspoons, wouldn't it? So, now let's see --.some salt. I guess a tablespoon. You know, you just put in some salt, but I'd-say about a tablespoon. Next you have to and you want two good gobs of it, a couple about 'the size of an egg--just what it needs. (Business of holding up both hands with the fingers indi- cating two medium-large hien's epgs.) And then I take a patty cutter, one of those things you mix short- ening into flour with, and if T don't have one handy I use my fingers, and I get it feeling just right before I put in the milk. How much milk? Oh, perhaps a quart. About a quart, I'd say. Then when it feels about right, I take it on the board and knead it some-- not too much--and cut the biscuits and put them in the pans. Then I shove them in a 450-oven. and take them out when they're done. I guess that isn't very much of a receet, but that's the way I make biscuits."
