e+ Page 6 The Haileyburian The Bible To-day Mr. H. van der Veen, a linguist and translator of the Netherlands Bible Society, who has worked for many years in Central Celebes, has recently completed a transla- tion of the Bible into Ta'e (South Toradja). Mr. van der Veen discovered how the telling of Bible stories helped him to establish an exact translation into the Toradja lan- guage. Beginning with a para- phrase of a Bible term, a 'vord, or a temporary make-shift render- ing, it becomes possible to explain this with a more exact rendering. Thus at first 'Heaven' was call- ed Banua Bulaana Puarz Matua -- the golden House of God' In the translation of the Bible this was vendered by the loan-word "sur- uga" which was little known at the beginning of missionary work but gradually became more accepted. In the story of the crossing of the Red Sea the idea of the "wa- ters being a wall' to the Israelites was conveyed by approaching the meaning of a wall by a phrase which meant "a sandstone cliff'.
