od Sage 6 The Haileyburian Thursday, November 9, 1961 Radical Design Change For Vauxhall in 1962 OSHAWA, Ont. -- A radical de- sign change is part of the totally new 1962 Vauxhall Victor models to be introduced soon by General Motors of Canada. The four-cylinder British-built ears are lower, wider and slightly longer. They have been engineered to provide a more relaxing ride and more passenger room. This is the Victor's greatest de- sign change in years. Over 400,000 Victors. have been built in the past. The new models have more head- room, hip and shoulder room as well as wider doors, Five can travel in comfort in the new Vic- tor. The trunk, too, is even more spacious with the spare wheel out | of the way im the right side wheel | arch. j The 92 cu. in. engine is not rad- ically changed, though an increase in compression ratio to 8.1 to 1 and a re-designed inlet manifold increase horse-power and torque. New 3-point engine mounts pro- vide even greater smoothness and flexibility. The use of lightweight alloys on clutch housing, induction manifold, transmission cover and other parts has resulted in im- portant savings in weight. Optional at extra cost on ail new Victors is a 4-speed transmis- sion controlled by a short floor- mounted lever. This transmission has synchromesh on all four for- ward speeds -- the first time ever on a popular-priced British car. Standard equipment is the 3-speed all- synchro transmission with steering column change anda much-improved control mechan- ism. Safety measures abound on the new Victors -- sharp edges and protuberances have. been elimin- ated; all doors incorporate 'anti- burst' devices in the special locks; vision is improved, with consider- ably more glass area and a wind- shield one-third larger; the area wiped by the parallel wipers is 66 per cent greater than on prev- ious models. 'Controllability' gains significant- ly from improved location of brake and accelerator pedals, revised in- strument panel and controls lay- out, and increased seating com- fort. Routine maintenance costs. on the new Victor have been cut be- cause there are only four lubrica- tion nipples, needing attention at intervals of only 12,000 miles. In- tervals for other service items are 3,000 miles apart. Brake adjust- ment is simpler; engine access much easier. The new Victors have the best paint finish and most effective metal protection in Vauxhall his- tory. A long-life cellulose synthetic enamel, finish is now being used -- it is more wear-resistant and retains its lustre longer. Beneath it are several layers of phosphate coating, primer and undercoat. The entire underbody, including the underside of the fenders, is sealed and protected with a gen- erous coating of tough bituminous sealer. All bright metal above the waistline is stainless steel. The new Victors are available in four versions the . Standard, Super and De Luxe sedans and an eye-catching new station wag- on. Color and trim options vary from six on the standard sedan to 14 (seven two-tone schemes) on the De. Luxe. On the Super and the station wagon series, bucket type front seats are now optional equipment. The De Luxe has bucket front seats in leather upholstery. Heater and defroster and windshield washer are standard equipment. The six-cylinder Vauxhalls Cresta and Velox -- are basically unchanged. But they now offer such optional equipment as indi- vidual front seats, centre arm rests in rear seats and leather or nylon upholstery in the Cresta. The large-size Vauxhalls are all finished in a hard cellulose -- syn- thetic enamel that retains its lustre longer. --ee St. James Anglican Christmas Bazaar Xmas took over the Community Hall for the Bazaar and tea held by the St. James Anglican Chureh W.A. on Friday, November 3.
