One of the pioneer Lodges of the North, the Silver Rebekah Lodge No. 107, Cobalt, marked its 50th anniversary last Friday. Some 150 members and mem- bers of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows gathered in the IOOF Hall to celebrate the event. The organization was established on October 17, 1911, when the char- ter meeting was held in the. then- Odd Fellow's Hall on Silver Street. Early meetings were held as well on Argentite Street over the Rodd and Deacon's Store as well as at 22 Lang Street, which was owned by the Jamieson Meat Company. This latter building, presently in use, was finally bought by the Co- balt Lodge No. 379 and the place is filled with 'pleasant memories" of the many years of activity. Four charter members were pre= sent, only one of whom holds con- tinuous membership in the local lodge. She is Mrs. Ellen Bishop, New Liskeard. With her were charter members Mrs. Ness McAulay, Haileybury; Miss Florence McLaughlin, Tim- mins; and Mrs. Janet Sykes, who nicame all the way from Detroit, Michigan, to be present at the 50th anniversary celebrations. Among the key executives on hand for the event, too, were Mrs. May Bennetts, Kirkland Lake, dis- trict deputy president; Mrs. Eric Greening, Cobalt, Noble Grand; Charles Byam, New Liskeard, Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Ontario and a member of the New Liskeard Lodge No. 352; -Mrs. Eula Hickie, Kirkland Lake, vice- president of the Rebekah Assemb- ly of Ontario and Mrs. Stella Wat- son, South Temiskaming, Quebec, district deputy president of Nipis- sing District No. 36. The 50th anniversary celebra- tions, complete with an appropri- ately decorated cake, were attend- ed from out of town by members of Rebekah organizations at. South Temiskaming, North Bay, Hailey- bury, New Liskeard, Englehart, Kirkland Lake and Timmins. To date, about 517 men and wo- men have received the Rebekah Degree locally and the present membership. stands at 100. .The lodge has made many contributions to local community welfare through the years.
