The Page 6 The Haileyburian Thursday, November 30, 1961 Cubs Trounce Lions Now in Fourth Place New Liskeard Cubs found their scoring punch last Friday night in a game against Kirkland Lions and blistered in enough goals to win two games for a handy 7-3 vic- tory and fourth place in the lea- gue standing. The Cubs played in a way that reminded fans of their drive and desire of other years, and out- skated and outplayed Lions for their win. Black tallied for the Cubs early in the game. Lions pulled even shortly after, and Mooney scored to give the Cubs a one goal lead at the end of the first period. In a wild, penalty studded sec- ond period, the Cubs moved into a two-goal lead on counters from Conlin and Jimmy Grant. In the third stanza Black and Cook counted before the Lions got their second and last goal on a nice effort by Lauzon. Conlin added another before the end of the game to complete the rout. Coach Don Shepherdson express- ed his satisfaction over the im- provement in the team. "Most of our boys lack exper- ience, and for a while it also look- ed as if they lacked desire,' he commented, "'but if they continue to play as they did on Friday we will have #0 trouble in reaching the playoffs.' The win, the first in seven games should give the Cubs a lift, and confidence which is just as im- portant to a green team. First Period de Ossie hrc AN od 3.03 | 2. Lions--Teasdale (Perry) 11.17 3. Dancing and mixed curling is being arranged and a good atten- dance is hoped for. There is a strong possibility that the New Liskeard Club will be using the Cobalt-Haileybury ice on Friday night for the start of their annual Mixed Spiel which is being held this week-end and as a result, the local Club decided to change their Social Night date from Friday to Satur- day. Last Friday evening, members of the New Liskeard and Cobalt- Haileybury Curling Clubs competed once more for the Clarke-Lang Trophy and the New Liskeard boys came out on top with a total of 83 points, while the local curlers could only count 69. However, there will be a dance for them to redeem themselves later in the season, as the second round is scheduled for sometime in March. Starting Decemtber 4, Mixed Curl- ing will take over, during the regu- lar draws at the local Club, for ap- proximately three to four weeks. Play will commence then in the Haileybury Service Centre compet- ition, with close to thirty rinks of draws and personnel of thé rinks will be completed by this week- ad and all skips will be notified "the date of their first game, and also the personnel of their team. Cobalt Election Only eight of the 24 nominat- ed at Cobalt last week qualified for positions, two will have a contest for the mayor's seat, and six have received accla- mation for council. In the battle for the mayor's chair are R. J. Miller, princip- al of the Cobalt High School and Councillor George St. Hil- aire. These are things which a planning board 'could work for in conjunc- tion with the council. As far as the water situation in North Cobalt is concerned, the water is urgently needed. But it must be installed as a local im- provement, and not as a tax bur- den to the entire township. Recently representatives of the Ontario Water Resources Commis- sion visited the council, and they were ridiculed and reviled.
