Teaching Mission Held At St. Paul Sister Rosemary Anne, Assistant Superior of the Sisterhood of St. John the Divine, Willowdale, Ont., conducted a teaching mission in St. Paul's Parish from Sunday, December 3, to Tuesday, Decem- 'per ey Sister pecuies Anne gave an address to the Parishioners at the Sung. Eucharist Sunday morning, and was the guest speaker Sun- day evening following Evensong to the Servers' Guild and A.Y.P.A. Monday, Sister conducted two quiet hours for women. 'Tuesday, Sister gave addresses to the mem- bers ofthe Altar Guild, Women's Auxiliary, Junior and Girl's Aux- laries. Tuesday evening the Bible Read- ing Fellowship were hosts when Sister gave a public address open te men and women. Many of the addresses given by Sister Rosemary Anne were il- lustrated by coloured slides on the life and work in the Convent. The teaching mission was arranged by Father Nixon, tthe Parish Priest, who is a Priest Associate of the Sisters. The Sisterhood of St. John the Divine, one of 'the many Religious Orders of the Anglican Church throughout the world, but the first Canadian Order to be founded, came to life on September 8, the Feast of the Nativity of the Bless- ed Virgin Mary, 1884, when the Mother Foundress, Hannah Grier Coombe, after receiving the full |, Noviciate training at St. Mary's Convent, Peekskill, New York, made her -Life Profession under the three Vows of Poverty, Chast- ity and Obedience, and became the first member of the Sisterhood of St. John the- Divine. The Rule of Life followed by the Community is based on the s Parish Rule of St. Benedict, and the first place is given to the Life of Pray- ler. At the Mother House the Holy Eucharist is offered daily, and the Seven Hours of the Divine Of- fice are recited. The Sisters have time each day for meditation, private prayer, Bible reading and spiritual read- ing, and from this foundation Life of Prayer are performed the works of mercy God commits to the Community. At the Mother House in. Willow- dale, Church embroidery work is done, Altar Breads made and. ac- commodation provided for those 'who wish to make a retreat or have a time of quiet. Sisters go out to speak on the Religious Life, conduct Retreats A few miles from the Mother 'House is. St. John's Convalescent Hospital, Newtonbrook, Ontario, which is administered by the Sis- ters. Since 1887 the Community. has had the Church Home for the Aged in. Toronto, which cares for elder- ly people. The Sisters- established and have taken charge of the Qu'Appelle Diocesan School for Girls in Re- gina, Saskatchewan. In Edmonton, Atberta, the Sis- ters have St. John's House where care is given to unmarried moth- ers. The Sisters also do mission work for the Parish of St. John the Evangelist in downtown Mont; 'real, Quebec. The street festivals of Italy and Spain and fire works at Christ- ;mastime, Canada now has illum- inated community trees. All.three local clubs had win- ners in the many events. Dot Me- Donald and Yvette Belanger car- ried off the ladies doubles; Denis Miller of Cobalt and Winnifred Graydon won the mixed doubles. Consolation prizes went to Win-' nifred Graydon and Jean Willars of New Liskeard in the = ladies doubles, and to Jack Perry and Red Lefoy of the Haileybury Club in the men's doubles. Following the games there will be a moccasin cance, PIM Miners Shade McKnights The status quota remained un- changed in basketball this season, Last year's undefeated Tri-Town champion, The P.I.M, Miners, con- tinued their winning ways last Thursday at the New Liskeard High School Gym as they eked rout a 49-45 win over the hosting MeKnight's Men's: Wear Blues. In a game which saw the lead change hands several times, the Miners held a 14-11 lead at the end of the first quarter only to see the homesters pull even at ihalf time and take a 36-32 lead into the final segment, which saw the Miners rally for 17 points for 'he victory. Big gun for the winners was Gary Sandel whose 26 point per- formance pulled his club into a first place tie with the Haileybury Town team in the newly formed Temiskaming Men's Basketball League.
